Der junge und talentierte aber erfolglose Maler Andrej Petrowitsch Tschartkow erwirbt in einer kleinen Kunsthandlung das Porträt eines alten Mannes für einen Spottpreis. Besonders die ausdrucksstarke Malweise der Augen des Porträts zieht in magisch an. Nachts erwacht er in seiner ärmlichen Behausung und erblickt plötzlich in Papier zusammengerollte Golddukaten, die von dem Dargestellten des Porträts zu stammen scheinen. Zuerst hält er es für einen Traum, dann entdeckt er ein Versteck im Rahmen des Bildes mit eben diesen Dukaten. Tschartkow wird schlagartig ein reicher Mann und für ihn beginnt ein besseres Leben. Schließlich steigt er auf zu einem der angesehensten Modemaler Petersburgs. Als er Jahre später das einst erworbene Porträt fortschaffen lässt, verfällt er dem Wahnsinn und stirbt schließlich verarmt. Das Porträt aber birgt noch ein weiteres Geheimnis.
Das Porträt ist eine Erzählung aus dem Zyklus: Petersburger Novellen. 1833/1834 entstanden, erschien der Text 1835 im ersten Teil der zweiteiligen Sammlung Arabesken. Aus dem Russischen übersetzt von Korfiz Holm. Coverabbildung unter Verwendung eines Gemäldes von Antonello da Messina. Es zeigt einen Ausschnitt des sogenannten Trivulzio-Porträts (1476), im Besitz des Museo civico d'arte antica / Palazzo Madama,Turin. Coverschrift gesetzt aus der 18teCentury.
