London, 1884. Sidney Grice is restless, having filed his latest case under S, for 'still to be solved', to await further inspiration. His ward, March Middleton, remains determined to uncover the truth.

Geraldine Hockaday was outraged on the murky streets of Limehouse. Yet her attacker is still on the loose. But then a chance encounter brings a new victim to light, and it seems clear March and Grice are on the trail of a serial offender.

Critic reviews

Praise for the author: "What is so refreshing about the Gower Street series is that they are never quite what you expect - these unusual originals stand out in what is a heavily populated genre." ( Crime Review)

Incredible

Fantastic series. I would love a 6th book. Listening to Ms. Gregory is enjoyable. She has a wide range of voices.

Too graphic for me

I have enjoyed this series - I enjoy the Sherlockian (but so much more) relationship between Mr. G., March and their clients. And the dry humor is quite different from many other mysteries. But this installment was just too graphic and gory for me, with a weird ending that I couldn’t describe.

I read books frequently with a friend, and we compare notes as we finish them. There are several authors that I won’t read because they’re too gory, but my friend loves them. I don’t. So maybe it won’t bother you. But this one made me think about whether I would continue if another book came out.

Follows the thread of the series, but...

A little too explicit with the blood and gore (I literally gagged during one scene) and depressing as hell. The plot was engrossing and not easily surmised; however the excessive descriptions of violent death and maimings detracted from the story. I can give credit that my visceral response means it's written with great talent. That being said, I probably will not continue with this series...

Gratuitous violence and convoluted story

I've liked the previous books in the series, but this last installment was pretty much dreck. Way too many graphic details and a confusing, long story - like the author couldn't resolve the ending and used unnecessary violence as gratuitous filler instead. Yuk.
