Publisher's summary

It’s the artist’s age-old dilemma: follow your conscience or follow the cash. So when a canceled movie star reaches out to up-and-coming writer Ivey Viola to discuss a mysterious project, she uses the opportunity to escape mid-pandemic New York for his private island with her roommate in tow. However, once on the island, she realizes that the cost of working with the toxic, closeted actor might be more than she’s willing to accept...or can refuse.

In this satirical new play from Nick Jones, Complicity Island explores the business of “show business”, offering a radical, irreverent look at cancel culture, the Hollywood elite, and the real price of selling out.

Editorial Review

The absurdist pandemic and #Me Too-era dark comedy I didn’t know I needed
Performed by a brilliant cast led by Mandi Masden and Ato Blankson-Wood, Nick Jones’s new play, Complicity Island, follows ambitious young playwright Ivey Viola as she reluctantly agrees to join problematic star Merlin Spooner at his private getaway to assist with a project he’s hoping will allow him to re-enter the limelight. Ivey quickly learns that everything on the island, including Merlin’s agenda, is as unclear and full of blurred lines as cancel culture itself. Amid the laughs and shocked gasps, this play poses challenging questions about the reality of second chances and how far one should be willing to go for success. —Caitlyn L., Audible Editor

Hilarious Satire

"Complicity Island" is a terrific satire of both the self-absorbed insularity of people in the entertainment industry and but also the way various people react when a powerful person is accused of doing bad things.

The story works on numerous levels and builds to a deliciously historical climax.

I highly recommend this one too anyone who comprehends irony and smart writing.

Great quick listen

I really enjoyed this. I need a part 2 though, the ending is a cliffhanger.

Reading was great, concept was great

In a time where a certain virus scared people and then was run with lies and hate … I feel this story would have been awesome without putting that fear in there

Fun easy listen

I liked it. I don't know if it was supposed to be but early on in the listening, I decided that it was a black comedy. or maybe a satire. That helps me to enjoy it more. otherwise it was a little overdramatic.... But I honestly think it was supposed to have a satirical tone.

Glad this recording is short so
I wasted a small amount of time. First and last time to listen to this author.

OH Come On!!!

I was really into this book.
Then, it was over.
It just ended. Abruptly.
No warning. Oh my goodness.
The writer could have eased into the ending, but no such luck here 😒.

Deep and dark

It certainly held my attention but I felt the ending was overly dramatic and totally unrealistic. I was left with mixed feelings. I didn’t love it but I didn’t hate it either.since it’s a quick read, I suggest you check it out yourself.

Has canceled culture gone to far?

I went ahead and wrote much too much about this topic, but I can’t submit until I rework it. So after I wrote it, I cut it and just wanted to submit my basic superior review. Was not allowed had a 15 word minimum. What I have to say could be perceived negatively and/or as some say might even trigger somebody, I decided to not post my comments at this point, but I will potentially review what I have written and post later once I’ve really had time to think, i’ve been burnt as many, probably have regarding saying something on Facebook or social media or in an email or text message to somebody and it gets interpreted in a way you did not intend. Maybe this diatribe here is another feather in Nick’s hat because somebody is thinking about the topic at hand. Good job, Nick, successfully doing a project so far away from your normal type of work, which I love. This book was awesome.

Interesting story but…

Unique story, which was well plotted out. My only complaint is that the narrators volume was not consistent. I usually listen at night when I cannot sleep, and I could not hear part of the story well at all.
