Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: There is no funnier way to soak in David Sedaris' humor than through his own voice. This stand-up show encompasses the best tales from his many book collections, and, told in David's hilariously deadpan whine, this is the essential Sedaris, for old fans or newbies alike. — Chris Doheny

Publisher's summary

If you are driving, pull over. If you are at work, close your door, unless you don't mind your colleagues seeing you doubled over, in tears, on your office floor. With this recording, taped before a delirious sold out audience at Carnegie Hall, you are there as David Sedaris performs new stories from his upcoming book. A parrot who mimics an ice maker, lovers quarreling over a rubber hand, and a Santa Claus who moonlights from his job as bishop of Turkey, the cast of characters in these stories is like no other. This new work will appeal to David's loyal fans as well as admirers of the classic comedy albums of George Carlin, Bill Cosby, and Steve Martin.

Recorded live on October 22, 2002, in New York City.

Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Winner, Humor, 2004

"Sedaris's material (Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day) is never funnier than when he's reading it himself." (AudioFile)
"David Sedaris Live at Carnegie Hall is a rollicking comedic masterpiece...this recording will deservedly take its rightful place among the best comedy albums of our time." (AudiobooksTODAY.com)
"As uproarious as Sedaris is on the page, he's even funnier reading his wickedly jaundiced reflections. With brilliant deadpan timing, Sedaris is a charm." (Publishers Weekly)

Laugh Together!

Any additional comments?

I've read several Sedaris books and have also seen him live several times, and let's just say I laugh when I read him but I laugh to tears when I see him live. Hearing the way he reads the stories and the roar of the crowd make for a greatly fun experience. You know how it is, you always laugh harder when someone else is laughing with you. This audiobook is the next best thing. Maybe not his best material, but still hilarious and fun. Looking forward to more live releases.

What a bargain!

$11 is not too much to pay to spend an hour with the nation's best satirist. Sure, I wanted more, but I got my money's worth!

David Sedaris Rocks!

I've been a fan of Sedaris for a few years now. I was first introduced to his unique writing and comedy on NPR's "This American Life." He is brilliant, and this recording is awesome. I highly recommend it, espeically if you're a Sedaris fan.

Wonderful but too brief for a full fee

Hilarious. This was a, workout and “wear the headphones and watch people laugh at me laughing” kind of an experience. But it only lasts for two workouts, tops. Delightful though.

Hilarious!

David Sedaris is such a funny man. To listen to him deliver his own writing, before an enthusiastic audience, is so much more fun than simply reading one of his books. His comedic timing is impeccable.

Funny and touching

6 to 8 black men had me laughing so hard I was scolded by a flight crew. Also the audience at Carnigy hall makes David funnier

I love this man

Had a long drive yesterday so I turned this on and I laughed the whole way. He’s so human and so dry. His writing is funny enough to read off the page, but it’s even better with his voice narrating. I hope he’s doing well and that he writes for many years to come.

Waste of my life..

this is not funny... the guys voice is very annoying, and he is reading from a book or something the whole time with the tone you would expect from a 4th grader thats reading their book report infront of the class... very borring.. cant imagine why the audience is laughing.. Dont buy this if your expecting somewhat of a stand up comedy =/
