Publisher's summary

This historical romance, perhaps the greatest cloak-and-sword story ever written, relates the adventures of four fictional swashbuckling heroes who loyally served the French kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV.

When the dashing young D'Artagnon arrives in Paris from Gascony, he becomes embroiled in three duels with the Three Musketeers: Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. But when he proves himself by fighting not against, but with, the Three Musketeers, they form a quick and lasting friendship. The daring escapades of the four pit them against a master of intrigue, Cardinal Richelieu, and the quintessential wicked woman, Lady de Winter.

Wonderful doesn't describe it.

The Three Musketeers is a story many of us know but from the movies. I recently changed my genre from Fantasy Sci-Fi to come classics. This story is masterfully written especially considering it was written in the mid 1800???s. The plot hooks and turns with every detail from one situation to another relate somehow and often in more than one way. The reader does a great job creating different voices to the point where we know who is speaking without the reader telling us.

If you???re looking for a familiar story with many more details than you may be used to read by a wonderful reader, The Three Musketeers should be in your library.

A Classic rendition of a true Classic.

Excellent performance of an excellent book. Much better story and characters than modern film renditions

Reader makes all the difference

Loved this book and all its sequels when I was in my twenties. But I’ve never been able to enjoy any of the audio versions until this one. Highly recommend this.

Swashbuckling, bleak view of male-female relations

I am criticizing this out of context with its time, but men pretending to love women so they will finance uniforms and horses, women seducing men to bend them to their will and use them as implements of destruction, or alternatively women as helpless and somewhat witless victims, and aristocratic musketeers as mainly a bunch of layabout gamblers. The story may be classic literature, but it gets pretty tedious.

A brilliant read.

This is one of my all-time favorite classics. Dumas has a real gift for portraying fallible human nature with humor and insight. The narrator does a great job capturing the characters- d'Artangnan's exuberance, Porthos' thick bluster, Athos' nobility.

Dumas, the grandson of French nobility and son of one of Napolean's generals, has captured 17th-Century French sensibilities and the intrigues of court, courting, and swashbucklery.

The narrative is witty and smart. I blame Disney, et al, for the cheapening of this wonderful, classic work of fiction. I've probably read this book five times and listened to it once, and no doubt will again.

Two thumbs up- way up!

Great Story, a must if you haven't heard it.

I dont know how I could have missed this author as I am an avid reader. Having just recently read the Count of Monte Christo, I had to have more. The Three Musketeers is equally as good, so grand, funny, and hard to stop listening to. I listen in the car on the way home from work and I often found myself sitting in the garage just wanting to hear a little more. I found this narrator to be very good, he pronounced evrything very well however I don't think he made the characters come to life as some others have. I am writing this review after having had 3 audiobooks and this was my first, so I did't realise this until after the fact

Such a great reader!

I loved the story, but what made it even better was to voice actor and his perfect accents and pronunciation of names and places in French.
