The Pilgrim's Progress Audiobook

The Pilgrim's Progress: From This World to That Which Is to Come

For 300 years, The Pilgrim's Progress has remained perhaps the best-loved and most read of devotional fictions. In plain yet powerful and moving language, Bunyan tells the story of Christian's struggle to attain salvation and the Gates of Heaven. He must pass through the Slough of Despond, ward off the temptations of Vanity Fair, and fight the monstrous Apollyon. In Part II, his wife and children follow the same path, helped and protected by Great-heart, until for them, too, "the trumpets sound on the other side."

    Any additional comments?

This book is definitely Spirit lead, characterizing all of the forces we face each and every day as persons and with their own dialogue. You have to appreciate the Old English, and in a short while you adjust to it and come to admire the way it flows. The performance is one of the best I've heard (David Shaw-Parker). Both book and performance are at that top level quality that is just not possible of every book. Thank you Jesus for it.

    Success!

"Classic tale but some liberties are taken..."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

If I purchased a Shakespeare audio book, I would expect a VERBATIM reading of the written classic. My ONLY complaint with this audio book is that it IS NOT verbatim. A few words have been altered from the written text. I do not understand WHY ANYONE would tamper with a classic. Don't change EVEN A WORD.
I enjoy the narration. The story is a MUST HAVE for every Christian home. I did not & will not ask for a refund as the changes in the audio book are minor but I WOULD hope that in the future, a CLASSIC BOOK that is produced as an audio book and presented as UNABRIDGED would also carry some mark to denote the written and oral words mirror each other or that they do not.

What other book might you compare The Pilgrim's Progress to and why?

I'm not sure that you could compare this work with any other work. Perhaps Milton's great classic "Paradise Lost" would be the closest and first obvious work that comes to mind.

What about David Shaw-Parker’s performance did you like?

Mr. David Shaw-Parker, in my humble opinion, is AN EXCELLENT choice to have performed the narration of this classic tale. I would have given him MORE than 5 stars if that were an option.

Do you think The Pilgrim's Progress needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Absolutely not. Don't tamper with a good thing.

    Any additional comments?

Keep the classics PURE...don't change EVEN A WORD in the written or oral performance of a classic.

This narrator will keep you lost in the drama of the story. Takes about 13 hours of listening. Syncs well between my phone, iPad, and laptop.

Fantastic book that can help believers in the 21st C understand that our struggles in the walk of faith are not unique to our generation, rather it has always been the same lonesome yet joyful journey.

"A gem of a book, brilliantly performed"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would absolutely recommend it. In fact, I have done so already many times over. Full disclosure: I am an atheist. I read this book not as Bunyan perhaps intended - to encourage one to turn to God - but as a terrific display of the essence of Puritanism: the idea of doing good works, predestination, temptation, and the single-minded pursuit of individual salvation even to the point of giving up on one's family.

What did you like best about this story?

The first part of the book focuses on Christian - his departure from his home town and his journey to Heaven. A curious story with lots of gory adventures along the way. Not pleasant to read, sometimes very difficult to even identify with the main character. But a gripping story nonetheless. The second part of the book was to me more interesting. This is the story of Christian's wife (Christiana) and her journey along the same route. In a gender stereotypical fashion, hers is not a story of individual victory over temptation/s, but a community (Christiana, her family, her next-door-neighbor, and a whole host of characters that they encounter along the way) joining forces towards Enlightenment (not of the rational kind but of the Puritan kind, of course).

What does David Shaw-Parker bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

David Shaw-Parker's reading is clear, crips, powerful. He brings Bunyan's characters to life in the most delicious way.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Why? Why would you want to objectify this book in the form of a movie? Please.. don't go there. Just leave it as is.. vibrant and alive in our own distinctive imagination.
