Editorial reviews

The creator of Sherlock Holmes delivers a classic adventure fantasy in this tale of a trip by journalists, scientists, and adventurers to investigate rumors of dinosaurs on a mysterious plateau deep in a mythical South American jungle. Much fun and over-the-top adventure ensue. The author is ably supported by Glenn McCready, who delivers a narration very much in the nineteenth-century style. He plays up the characters' big personalities and celebrates the rather orotund style of the writing, which isn't as tight as in the Holmes series. Not for modern-fiction-only readers, this collection will appeal most to lovers of nineteenth-century literature.

Publisher's summary

Here is the precursor to Jurassic Park. Victorian explorers have heard there is a remote plateau where dinosaurs still survive, and a group set outs on a dangerous mission to find out more about it.

Critic reviews

"Glen McCready's performance captures the time and tone of Doyle's material perfectly without straying into melodrama." ( Publishers Weekly)

Michael Crichton's 1990 sci-fi best seller became a cultural phenomenon with Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster film adaptation. But what are the key differences between the novel and the movie? No less incredible, still, is the novel on which it's based, Crichton's masterpiece. But just how similar are the two? If you're looking for the major differences between Jurassic Park the book and the movie, we've got you covered.

Fun read, great listening

A well told tale from the master of the detective story, even if our modern scientific knowledge makes some of it ridiculous. Wonderful reader handles different voices very well. I wonder if the author imagined writing a sequel?

Not often a book makes me smile....

...from cover to cover, but with elegant prose, beautiful fiction and a witty turn of phrase on every page, The Lost World delivers a superb Victorian Adventure. The narration was flawless, the story happily ridiculous (but rendered enchanting and almost believable by the pen of a master) I highly recommend to anyone who has ever longed for a ... lost world of soaring adventure, elevated vocabulary and perhaps a Peterson Pipes.

A creative 1912 classic that shows its age poorly.

This book, written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1912, has some science fiction creativity within it that was ground braking for it's time. A pocket world discovered by explorers filled with strange ape men, tribal wars and dinosaurs? It's wonderous, thrilling and adventureous; the Jurassic Park thought up before Michael Crichton was even born.

Unfortunately, it's also very, VERY dated. No only is the language use very aged, but certain aspects of social perspectives of the otherwise humorously flawed main characters would be considered flat out extremely racist today. It's a terrible shame, really. The setting of exploration would make for a great movie, but the script would have to be heavily modified in order to avoid upsetting everyone in the theater.

This book, even though it is a classic, can only be recommended to those who  relieze that some books have not aged in a way that reflect modern values. It's a product of it's time and it shows, sometimes in some very negative ways.

Ho hum

This is the kind of book that - for me - REQUIRES that I have no distractions. That didn't happen. I lost interest off and on.

Why Classics are Worth Reading

I purchased Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World" as an "Audible Daily Deal", since it was by the Sherlock Holmes author and I liked those stories. What I got was superb experience with the same detail and nuance (that only comes from a book, not a movie) as the SH series.
The characters and story in "The Lost World" are on a par with the best of the Sherlock books, while being amusing and insigntful in a "British" way. SADoyle was definitely a master of painting scenes with colorful details in his books.
The voicing acting by Glen McCready was impeccable, I didn't feel I was being read to, but rather was "there" through the story.
This certainly make me want to get more by Doyle and other "classic" authors. The audio performances bring these stories to life.
I'm also glad that I got this book for a bargain.
