I had no idea when I bought this that some genius had made the decision to add a background sound every few minutes to the narration. I could just picture some college kid they had paid in burritos in the sound booth, pressing various sound effect buttons and high fiving himself for his totally righteous editing skills.
But still! It's cheap and you could do worse.
I feel for any narrator who has to read Lovecraft's wonderful but archaic prose. Jim Donaldson did a great job with it, though! I enjoyed his reading, and appreciated the addition of some musical touches and sound effects of moans and shrieks during dramatic moments. It really made listening to the story a better experience than reading it would have been. I will be looking for other horror works done by Mr. Donaldson.
From what I've read, this was one of Lovecraft's early works, and I think that shows. The story seemed to go on longer than needed. I thought that HPL's xenophobia was showcased more than usual in this tale, which was off-putting.
There are some good creepy scenes in the story, which I enjoyed.
After the end of the story, there is a short piece giving some background on Lovecraft and his influence on modern-day writers. I thought this was nicely done and appreciate the effort to show the significance of HPL's works.
The narrator Jim Donaldson was very enjoyable with his performance. I caution you not to set a timer with this title and drift off to sleep. You see for no reason at all they hit a dong making you exit REMS and sit up with hernia generating force.
This was my first Lovecraft experiance and Ill give him another go, just without the sudden loud background effects.
Filled with distracting and non-contributory sound effects, especially at the start of each chapter. I wanted this story but, if there had been another read available, I'd have taken it in a heartbeat.
Painfully top heavy for a mediocre reading.
This seemed flat without an interesting character and little devropment. It was terribly inflated...I usually like the vocabulary of older works but this seemed overdone in both the writing and the reading. I like Poe and Koontz ...
I'm a web developer based out of Sacramento, I listen to books while I work, and love audible.
This was really around 2.5, it was decent. But it reads like a pulp story and probably was, since I have a hard time getting into pulp stories I didn't enjoy it as much as others would.
H.P Lovecraft was an innovator and hugely important. He produced a great deal of amazing work that revolutionized horror.
He was also incredibly racist and xenophobic. This story reads like a right wing website, dripping with ethnic stereotypes and paranoia. I'm not leveling this as a moral complaint. If the presence of these blatant stereotypes don't put you off, by all means, enjoy the book. I'm just putting it out there for the folks who won't enjoy that kind of thing.
A strange combination of next listen, and the planned one after that: Buddhism for Beginners then the Exorcist. (Listened to Neil Gaiman's Anasi Boys and the Amityville Horror right before this one)
Possibly, but there'd certainly be "PC" concerns.
"Hmm... Not for the diversity sensitive"
Nice creepy short story from HPL
I prefer the Cthulu myths ones
He's got a good voice but it's a little soporific. I liked the background sound effects.
It's a touch racist by 21st century standards!
"Not bad for 50p..."
A die-hard Lovecraft fan who appreciates the dramatics of sound effects accompanying a story.
The prose was hard to follow in places - I found myself listening to several parts again just to keep up with the story.
Though the story was read well, the sound effects in the background were distracting and amateurish.
The end section of the audio book gave some insight into Lovecraft's life and his first steps into becoming an author, which was interesting and worth listening to.
