Publisher's summary

First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. His creator, Conan Doyle, imbued his detective hero with intellectual power, acute observational abilities, a penchant for deductive reasoning and a highly educated use of forensic skills. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques.

Doyle ended up writing four novels and 56 short stories featuring Holmes and his companion, Dr. Watson. All but four are told in the first person by Watson, two by Holmes, and two are written in the third person. Together, this series of beautifully written Victorian literature has sold more copies than any other books in the English language, with the exceptions of the Bible and Shakespeare.

Volume 1 in this series consists of two novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four, followed by a collection of short stories entitled The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Great Anthology and a Wonderful Value!

There are so many titles in the Sherlock Holmes series, and I have been in a real quandary about where to start! I knew I would eventually get every title, and what a huge amount of credits that would be; a strain even on the Platinum plan! And how do you pick a favorite title to begin with when every story is so clever?

Needless to say I was THRILLED to see the first volume in a series of three anthologies; for three credits I will be able to get every title. "The Complete Stories" in the title makes me so happy; there are no compromises to be made here. What joy!

The narrator was excellent; while I did not care for his female voices, there are not that many times when women are actually speaking in a Sherlock Holmes story. His male voices are excellent; it was always easy to distinguish between Watson and Holmes. Sherlock's voice had that edgy quality that reminded me of the best Sherlock actor from the old black and white movies (Basil Rathbone?).

I know I will listen to these stories again and again! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Volume 1 and am eagerly awaiting Volumes 2 and 3. Just think - three titles and I'll have them ALL (insert gleeful chuckle). :-)

Mostly brilliant

What did you love best about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1?

The stories are great, what more can you say? However, as good as the narrator is, he should take off his wristwatch for recording sessions as I could hear his alarm. The publisher has no ear for detail, this bit should have been re-recorded.

But overall, well worth the price.

What does Charlton Griffin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His wristwatch alarm :)

Brilliantly read and so entertaining

The true genius of these works is brought to another level by the narrator Charlton Griffin. His reading is impeccable, and vocal characterizations are masterful. A totally entertaining experience!

Background noise

This studio was not up to par with what I would expect from Audible. I have heard pages turning, clearing of throats and even a watch beeping!

JUST OK

No. 1 is not as much of a fun listen as no. 2 but the stories are still Doyle's so worth the time. Also very Sherlockian of corse.

classics are classics for a reason!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

i'd recommend this series for sure. holmes is the greatest detective in history, picking up on details that most would miss. he was CSI before CSI was even in the alphabet!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1?

a case in scarlet was the first holmes story, and from the beginning you are hooked! his eye for detail and his rapid thought process are detailed very well, and as the stories go on, the character fully develops. even if you've read these before, it's great to listen to them as it adds yet another layer on to the sherlock persona.

Have you listened to any of Charlton Griffin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

i have not listened to any of griffin's other works yet, but can't wait to. he does a great job narrating as watson and giving voice to holmes.

Who was the most memorable character of The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1 and why?

ummm, i guess i'd have to go with sherlock. why? because he's sherlock!
