One of the most significant books ever written by a head of State, the Meditations are a collection of philosophical thoughts by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121 - 180 ce). Covering issues such as duty, forgiveness, brotherhood, strength in adversity and the best way to approach life and death, the Meditations have inspired thinkers, poets and politicians since their first publication more than 500 years ago. Today, the book stands as one of the great guides and companions - a cornerstone of Western thought.

The great leaders insight on morality, ethics, love and war. His belief in worrying about how you view yourself rather than how others view you is a very powerful thought from such a public figure. The Eastern philosophy of mindfulness is exemplified by much of his writing.
You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take. —Wayne Gretzky
Sometimes Marcus can get a bit repetitive, this is probably due to the fact that this book was actually a diary and was not written intending to be a proper book. I had a much better time listening to the book than reading it.
Marcus Aurelius was one of the few rulers who was good with words as well as with actions. The whole thing is great.
Duncan performs his reading marvelously, he brings Marcus to life, it feels like author is actually talking to you.
BEGIN EACH DAY by telling yourself: Today I shall be meeting with interference, ingratitude, insolence, disloyalty, ill-will, and selfishne
It's a shame that only a few other classics from stoicism are availble at audible. I would like to see other books from seneca and a very good book about the subject here: A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy
A classic work of personal philosophy that has not aged a day since it was written by Emperor Marcus Aurelius between 170 and 180 CE.
Fantastic voice...not grating or wheezy or nerdily academic...Steen sounds like a soldier and a dignified ruler, and it is so easy to imagine Aurelius himself narrating his Meditations.
I would still read the book, because this is philosophy and not something you gobble down in a few hours. This is a road map for living. But I enjoyed being able to listen to a title that I have loved since I was 16, while doing something else with my hands.
Concise, relevant, clear. This book lays out the heart of stoic philosophy and is a guide for living your life as a stoic.
Commanding voice and use of language.

This is undoubtedly one of the best books ever written! Best advice for young and old in a perfectly straightforward manner. The most remarkable treatise on how to live ones life, whether it be on your actions or responding to the actions of others. One of the most remarkable books that Ive ever read- hands down. This is the best audible version of it as well. AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ.
Duncan Steen is PERFECT for this book. He feels like a super wise father.
The tone of the narrator did almost everything for me.
It's worth the price.
Wisdom to remember
Provides wisdom on how to live. This is one of the great books on the subject.
He reads it extremely well, as if he is Marcus Aurelius.

I wish I had gotten around to this classic many years ago. At this stage of my life, I am finding love and joy and good works everywhere I look. I am way, way too far along to need reminding that we all die soon anyway, or to contemplate what happens to dead bodies or any more dismal nonsense.
Yes, it's a classic and Wikipedia has a wonderful long article about this fine person.
I want to recognize Duncan Steen's wonderful, smooth reading of this work. He sounds a bit like my old teacher, Stuart Wilde, another Brit. He reads with understanding so that the listener is better able to understand also. He varies his pace and tone so that the listener is refreshed. I never had the feeling that he was just droning on. I will definitely follow this narrator.
Ranks at the top of other audiobooks.
Excellent reader gives the book the gravitas and emphasis it deserves and makes the work come alive.
