Publisher's summary
Nothing in the whole of literature compares with The Master and Margarita. One spring afternoon, the Devil, trailing fire and chaos in his wake, weaves himself out of the shadows and into Moscow. Mikhail Bulgakov's fantastical, funny, and devastating satire of Soviet life combines two distinct yet interwoven parts, one set in contemporary Moscow, the other in ancient Jerusalem, each brimming with historical, imaginary, frightful, and wonderful characters. Written during the darkest days of Stalin's reign, and finally published in 1966 and 1967, The Master and Margarita became a literary phenomenon, signaling artistic and spiritual freedom for Russians everywhere.

Story
It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge. When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Grace Evans, an overworked New Yorker looking for a total escape from her busy life, books an Airbnb on a ranch in the middle of Wyoming. Story
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Prince Myshkin returns to Russia from an asylum in Switzerland. As he becomes embroiled in the frantic amatory and financial intrigues that center around a cast of brilliantly realized characters and that ultimately lead to tragedy, he emerges as a unique combination of the Christian ideal of perfection and Dostoevsky's own views, afflictions, and manners. His serene selflessness is contrasted with the worldly qualities of every other character in the novel.

Read and listen over and over
It's absolutely amazing masterpiece. The words and sentences are so delightfully juicy and ironic. Bulgakov plays with the language extremely tastefully and graceful. The magic of reality and a reality of magic intertwined and not giving us even a second of rest or boredom. I was reading it on my tipy toes

Amazing!

Wonderful story!!
My father gifted this book to me about 40 years and I read it a few times. But every time I discover and experience something new. Nostalgia, enjoyment and appreciation for a wonderful story teller Mikhail Bulgakov.

The voice acting
Классика, одна из любимых! Очень хорошо было прочитана, все персонажи почувствовались. Больше ничего сказать, Булгаков топ

Entertaining
Word of caution: this audiobook is read entirely in Russian, it is not a translation.
That being said, the performance is spectacular. The characters come to life.
The story is very entertaining, but lacks parsimony. There are many instances where the obvious is bluntly and redundantly explained. Furthermore, the ending feels melodramatic and weak compared to the rest of the plot.

I've read this book over 2 decades, probably, over 5 times. Every time, it is like reading it anew. It is a masterpiece, one of a kind.

Amazing!
What about Vladimir Ivanovich Samoylov’s performance did you like?
Samoylov did an outstanding job in portraying the characters! I haven't heard anything (anyone) better. it's like listening to a play on a radio!
Any additional comments?
Growing up in USSR i couldn't escape reading this book when at school It was a part of compulsory reading that we HAD to do. I personally think it was great idea, but WAY to early to get to the point and main idea of the book.
Now, decades later i keep reading it all over and over again. It is by far one of my favorite books. Every time i find something new for myself!
Highly recommend this version to all native Russians and people who can comprehend Russian language (Speech).

So different
20 years later. Same text but sounds so different! Or is it me getting wiser. Or just older...

Great classic
Master and Margarita is one of my most favorite books of all times. I read it in Russian, English, now listened to this version in Russian, and I am sure will keep re reading again :) I love Bulgakov in general, but this is the favorite of mine, as it is full of satire and a subtle happy ending, despite the devastating times, during which and about which this book was written. Bulgakov was amazingly talented, and this is a true Russian classic.

Loved this, great narrator with wonderful voices for all the characters. Would highly recommend to anyone, even if you've already read the book.
