Publisher's summary

William Dorrit has been a resident of the Marshalsea debtors prison for so many years that he has gained the nickname "The Father of the Marshalsea". However, his suffering is eased by his close bond with youngest daughter Amy, or "Little Dorrit".

The dashing Arthur Clennam, returning to London after many years in China, enters their lives, and the Dorrits' fortunes begin to rise and fall.

A biting satirical work on the shortcomings of 19th century government and society.

INTOXICATING NARRATION OF GREAT STORY

Anton Lesser transforms narration into high art ! With this worthy vehicle for his talents. One of Dickens best novels, Little Dorrit is highly under-rated and one of his novels that asks for repeated listening s. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
There is an excellent, and relatively new bbc production of little dorrit available on Itunes that is unusually good. because Its a mini-series, and not a movie, there is enough time to tell the whole story and stay true to the book. It is a very high- end production that not only has top notch casting and acting, but looks stunning! with great effort being given to replicate the period.
If your interested in indulging in both the book and the mini-series- listen to the book first.

Charles Dickens: a wonderful audio experience

Where does Little Dorrit rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

An excellent listening experience. Good performance and of course inimitable Dickens characters.

What other book might you compare Little Dorrit to and why?

Bleak House, Our Mutual Friend. If you love Dickens, and long well written novels, then Little Dorrit is great, although not as moving as David Copperfield.

Which character – as performed by Anton Lesser – was your favorite?

Mr. Dorrit, the father, was particularly well realized by both the author and the performer.

Typically long and winding, but great story

Anton Lesser. I love you in everything, but this was awesome. The longer it went on the more you honed the characters. Beautifully read.

Anton Lesser is a genius: Dickens is OK too

Little Dorrit offers the best and worst of Dickens (wit, lyricism, character, humanity, caraciture, sentimentality, over-extended passages, great plot with some very clunky bits). Overall, though, it's in the top half of his novels. I can't praise Anton Lesser enough. His narration is simply fantastic. Audible has some great readers but Lesser is unsurpassed. It's not just his mastery of accents; it's also his perfect but subtle timing and stress. Just listen to the way he puts he emphasis on "off" when he reads the brilliantly funny account of the "circumlocution office". Thats shows absolute mastery and understanding of his material.

I loved this long, long story, so well told both by Dickens and by Anton Lesser, perfect!

I loved e every moment of it all..

The whole book was read by Mr. Lessor so Beautifully and considerately portraying the different characters so truthfully that I could picture them all through the story. The characters came alive. Thankyou Mr. Lessor.

Well read.

Made the story come alive. I own the movie and it fills in the blanks from the film.

Great story and wonderful narrator.

Any additional comments?

I have listened to a lot of Dickens over the last year, much of it narrated very well by Simon Vance. Decided to switch narrators and I loved Mr. Lesser also. Audible has a couple of versions of Little Dorrit, and this is the older, and longer one (which is why I chose it...). Who am I to say Dickens was a good writer, but Dickens was a good writer.

The narrator is a master of voice!

Like many of Dickens' works I think it helps to listen at least twice to really understand what is going on.

Simply wonderful performance of a great Dickens cl

What does Anton Lesser bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Anton Lesser brought each of the many memorable characters vividly to life. What a fantastic reading! I usually listen to my audiobk during my daily commute, then read the print edition at night. In this case, the audio was more enjoyable and made it easier to keep the large cast of characters straight.

Any additional comments?

The novel's comedy comes through the follies of the characters, and Dickens humor made me laugh out loud throughout. ... Then there's the awful forced ending that Dickens tacked onto his book. After 700+ pages, I guess he just got tired of writing and wrapped it all up with melodrama and coincidences too far-fetched to believe. No matter. I loved the book and forgive Dickens for momentary disbelief at the end.
