Publisher's summary

One of Jane Austen's most popular novels. Arrogant, self-willed, and egotistical, Emma is her most unusual heroine.

Juliet Stevenson best narrator

I didn't always care for Emma compared to Persuasion or Mansfield Park but I've come to appreciate the comedy of this book and have listened to it multiple times. When making recommendations to friends listening to Jane Austen, I always recommend Juliet Stevenson narrations, she distinguishes the different characters without it seeming like a theatrical performance.

The Best Austen Narrator and Interpreter!

Juliet Stevenson is simply the best! If you are an Austen fan (or long to be an Austen fan) you will thoroughly enjoy the unabridged, complete works of Austen, narrated by Juliet. Her enthusiasm for the text never wavers and she brings fresh energy to the narration. She masterly “voices” the different characters, with subtle nuances, in a manner which is never irritating. For instance, she interprets a man’s voice in a bold and confident way, in which the pitch of her voice does not significantly change. It is very artful.

Juliet doesn’t merely “read” the book: she “interprets” the book and dramatizes — yet with subtlety and artful skill.

Don’t merely watch the film adaptations and then conclude that you “know” Jane Austen. Read the book or — better yet — listen to the book, narrated by the brilliant Juliet Stevenson.

Excellent narration!

The story is wonderful. It’s maybe the best of all Jane Austin’s novels. But the narrator makes the listening even better.

Why can't all literature be like this?

The narration was great but above all else the story was simply as I expect it to be. It is so hard to find really good literature in modern times and that is why we have the classics... Authors like Jane Austen are constantly my 'fall back' plan really when I am looked to be immersed in a story with actual characters, characters that are so imperfect and yet so absolutely perfect in the roles they play.

Most persons already know the story of Emma, there are enough movies about the book in modern time for many persons to at least have some idea of the story. The novel was rightly named Emma and is easily one of my favorite female characters and, at the time the novel was written, was decades ahead of her time. The dynamics and description of details between the very relationships between the characters in the book by Jane Austen is what sets this novel apart I believe. Truly, just plain majestically written.

The narrator was good, she did a credible enough job to carry the book off. I will admit that she could have done more, but in all honesty the content itself more than overcompensates for the less than stellar narration.

All in all.... Stellar book... Beautiful title...

The perfect delivery of one of Austen's best

Juliet Stevenson does an amazing job of presenting Emma: each character is distinct, and the infamous "Mrs. E." and the sweetly overwhelming Miss Bates are topnotch. I've read, seen, and listened to this work probably 6 times, and Stevenson's version does a fantastic job of highlighting the wit, insight, and satire of Austen's novel. Highly, highly, highly recommended on all fronts.

Great story, great performance.

Well done all around. The narrator does an excellent job with getting all the voices just right, my favorite performance of this classic story.

Emma revisited

I always thought I would never like anyone reading Emma, but Flo Gibson. I was wrong. Juliet Stevenson does a wonderful job.
