Long

Great story, beautiful narration, but too long for my taste. I listened to the end, but at many points I kept thinking, “How much longer can I listen to them plan a party?”

It’s really a mystery story

One of the marvels of Jane Austen’s small collection of mature novels is that each one seems to be a slightly different genre. Emma is her mystery story. Like any good mystery, it can be reread with great pleasure. The always-wrong heroine Emma and the always-right hero Mr. Knightly head a cast of extremely memorable characters, among whom it is delightful to spend time. Indeed, you will likely recognize people you know in them.

Juliet Stevenson’s performance is wonderful, bringing out all the humor and making each character come to life. (She played the odious Mrs. Elton to perfection in one filmed adaptation.)

Surprise enjoyment

Although many people love this story and fiction like it, this was the first I have ever read (listened to) before. Typically, I lean toward non-fiction. I was pleasantly surprised to really enjoy not only the storyline but the performance as well. Had my daughter not suggested the book, I probably would have never chosen it for myself. Very, very pleased with the experience.

Juliet Stevenson best narrator

I didn't always care for Emma compared to Persuasion or Mansfield Park but I've come to appreciate the comedy of this book and have listened to it multiple times. When making recommendations to friends listening to Jane Austen, I always recommend Juliet Stevenson narrations, she distinguishes the different characters without it seeming like a theatrical performance.

The Best Austen Narrator and Interpreter!

Juliet Stevenson is simply the best! If you are an Austen fan (or long to be an Austen fan) you will thoroughly enjoy the unabridged, complete works of Austen, narrated by Juliet. Her enthusiasm for the text never wavers and she brings fresh energy to the narration. She masterly “voices” the different characters, with subtle nuances, in a manner which is never irritating. For instance, she interprets a man’s voice in a bold and confident way, in which the pitch of her voice does not significantly change. It is very artful.

Juliet doesn’t merely “read” the book: she “interprets” the book and dramatizes — yet with subtlety and artful skill.

Don’t merely watch the film adaptations and then conclude that you “know” Jane Austen. Read the book or — better yet — listen to the book, narrated by the brilliant Juliet Stevenson.

Excellent narration!

The story is wonderful. It’s maybe the best of all Jane Austin’s novels. But the narrator makes the listening even better.
