Because of the widespread awareness of the story of the evil Transylvanian count and the success of numerous film adaptations that have been created over the years, the modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

This production of Dracula is presented by what is possibly the best assemblage of narrating talent ever for one audiobook: Emmy Award nominees Alan Cumming and Tim Curry plus an all-star cast of Audie award-winners Simon Vance (The Millenium Trilogy), Katherine Kellgren (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Susan Duerden (The Tiger’s Wife), John Lee (Supergods) and customer favorites Graeme Malcolm (Skippy Dies), Steven Crossley (The Oxford Time Travel series), Simon Prebble (The Baroque Cycle), James Adams (Letters to a Young Contrarian), Nicola Barber (The Rose Garden), Victor Villar-Hauser (Fun Inc.), and Marc Vietor (1Q84). These stellar narrators have been cast as follows:

Alan Cumming as Dr. Seward
Simon Vance as Jonathan Harker
Katy Kellgren as Mina Murray/Harker
Susan Duerden as Lucy Westenra
Tim Curry as Van Helsing
Graeme Malcolm as Dailygraph correspondent
Steven Crossley as Zookeeper’s account and reporter
Simon Prebble as Varna
James Adams as Patrick Hennessey
Nicola Barber as Sister Agatha
Victor Villar-Hauser as Arthur Holmwood
Marc Vietor as Quincey Morris
John Lee as Introductory paragraph, various letters

Critic reviews

"Listening to this full-cast performance turns out to be remarkably suspenseful and chilling…The superlative cast lends this powerful production the diversity that is required by the structure of the novel…Each actor employs various accents, infusing into the characters vibrant emphasis, urgency, and dread." Featured Article: What Is Gothic Fiction? A Genre Explainer

Some of the most popular and enduring novels and short stories are works of Gothic fiction, including Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. These creepy, creaky literary classics have the power to transport listeners to foggy moors and crumbling estates, where wolves howl in the night and shadows lurk in the hallways. But Gothic fiction is more than just cobwebs and candelabras.

awesome audio!

Would you listen to Dracula again? Why?

I've made it through 40 years without having to read this story. but when i saw the cast on this (katherine kellgren is one of my favorite narrators) along with well known actors like tim curry and alan cummings, i was instantly curious. i know this is one of those books i'd have slogged through and hated every moment of it. but listening to them perform the story, i was hooked the entire way through. definitely the version to listen to if you want to experience dracula the way it should be experiened!

Dracula

What did you love best about Dracula [Audible Edition]?

The story is captivating and the narration was flawless.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dr. Van Helsing was one of my favorite characters. I also enjoyed Mr. and Mrs. Harker.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It is far too long of a story to listen to in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

Audible's edition of Dracula is superior to all others.

The first version!

Wonderful performance of Dracula as it was meant to be heard. So many have tried to adapt it but none will ever quite be what Bram Stoker first wrote. Super entertaining. Alan Cummings was brilliant. His voice was perfect.

Imagine Sitting Around A Campfire...Spooky!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would, and have. The shared narration is masterful and completely immersive. I've seen Alan Cumming perform on Broadway, and he is absolutely captivating in this treatment even without watching him prowl the stage. Dim the lights and pray for rain to accompany you on your journey.

What did you like best about this story?

Dracula has been on my annual re-read list since I can remember. To read Dracula is to be transported back in time, where formality is a given in even the smallest bit of dialogue. The use of diaries and letters is incredibly effective for understanding the creeping horror that has befallen the authors of those documents. Fantastic all around.

Who was the most memorable character of Dracula [Audible Edition] and why?

Dracula himself, a sad and lonesome creature who nevertheless exploits those around him for his own ends. The description of his nails still brings chills, and I've read this book probably 50 times.

Worth it!

Dracula is a masterpiece. The performance of the audio is excellent. The sexism of olden times can be frustrating for a modern lady to listen to haha. I found myself rolling my eyes at times. But those were the understandings back then. The book is dark, intriguing, complex, and romantic. I highly recommend!
