Editorial reviews

At 34 hours in length, this is quite an undertaking, but there's no one better qualified than Simon Vance to lead us through this audio journey. He parses the author's long sentences well, pausing sufficiently to make the details easy to follow while still maintaining a quick enough pace to keep the story going. Most enjoyable is his voicing of the myriad characters who appear in the narrative - and characters they certainly are. Vance times their occasionally hilarious exchanges especially well. All of this is delivered in a manner that suggests that Vance revels in Dickens's prose and sly humor, and the listener cannot help but revel along with him. Three cheers for Vance - and not the least for his stamina!

Publisher's summary

David Copperfield is the quintessential novel by England's most beloved novelist. Based in part on Dickens's own life, it is the story of a young man's journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among its gloriously vivid cast of characters, he encounters his tyrannical stepfather, Mr. Murdstone; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble yet treacherous Uriah Heep; the frivolous, enchanting Dora; and one of literature's great comic creations, the magnificently impecunious Mr. Micawber - a character resembling Dickens's own father.

In David Copperfield - the novel he described as his "favorite child" - Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of his most exuberant and enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy and comedy in equal measure.

My unlikely favourite

I never thought I'd say this about a classic - I'm into fast-paced action novels - but this has turned out to be possibly the best book I've read.

Extraordinary

Any additional comments?

After a while, you realize that this is not usual Dickens, but an almost certain highly accurate autobiography, told in some of the most incredibly clever and scintillating prose in the history of the English language. The narrator is so good with the incredible voicing of so many characters, that the entire experience of listening to this was a true joy.

Fantastic in every way!

A wonderful heartwarming, moving and totally engrossing story brilliantly narrated by Simon Vance.
THe story follows the life of David Copperfield (said to be somewhat autobiographical of Charles dickens) as he grows up from his unusual and not entirely happy birth to the trials of his younger years and emergence into adulthood.

The whole memorable journey is marvelously embellished by the wide assortment of characters artfully portrayed and brought to life by dickens’ sumptuous writing.

Enjoyed every line, moment and chapter!

A great presentation of a classic story

I've always heard of this book, but never did get around to reading it. With audible and 2 hours of commuting a day, I could finally make the commitment to give it a go.

It is a solid work. Although not terribly exciting in terms of todays works (action, violence, sex, etc.), the story flows well and the characters are rendered exceptionally well.

As with most works of this period, they can be overly descriptive, but perhaps that is more me being a tainted b y our own societal perspective of needing brevity and speed.

As always, Simon Vance is spectacular as a narrator. He really is one of the best in the business.

Loved every minute of it

The narration is excellent and does justice to this most excellent book, my favorite by Dickens. The characters are so interesting and the story is so interesting I didn't want it to end. This was a wonderful refresher for a book I have not read in many years.

Great performance of a masterpiece of literature

Simon Vance was born to do Dickens. And his performance here is truly extraordinary. He captures the essence of the writer, the characters, the time. I felt very sad when I finished listening to the book. It was like saying goodbye to intimate friends. Congratulations to Mr. Vance for a tour de force performance.
