Publisher's Summary

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

This epic, exuberant novel is one of the greatest coming-of-age stories in literature, chronicling David Copperfield's extraordinary journey through life as he encounters villains, saviors, eccentrics, and grotesques - including the wicked Mr. Murdstone, stouthearted Peggotty, formidable Betsey Trotwood, impecunious Micawber, and the odious Uriah Heep. Dickens' great novel (based, in part, on his own boyhood and which he described as a "favorite child") is a work filled with life, both comic and tragic.

Listen to Richard Armitage bring Dickens' words to life, and you'll understand why Virginia Woolf called David Copperfield "the most perfect of all the Dickens novels".

    "The Armitage Voice""
Where does David Copperfield rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

So far, this is the one I love the most....David Copperfield is one of my favorites anyway, but to have that voice, the voice of Richard Armitage "read it to me", just awesome

Have you listened to any of Richard Armitage’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, they way he reads, the tones, the inflections, the voice changes is just brilliant..

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I almost did, but I needed to sleep...

    Any additional comments?

Just keep them coming with Richard Armitage at the helm.......Thank you to Audible and to "The Armitage" for bringing David Copperfield to life.....

What made the experience of listening to David Copperfield [Audible Studios] the most enjoyable?

Richard Armitage's voice was incredible. He brought this book to a new life. His beautiful inflections and characterizations were spot on.

    Any additional comments?

You've either read David Copperfield and want to know if it is worth the listen, or you are new to this work. Be not hesitant, this is one of the best performances on Audible. And David Copperfield is just classic. Dicken's has a definite style to him. He's studied for a reason, and that reason is damned good writing. Spend the credit... you'll be cultured as well as entertained.

Where does David Copperfield rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    First.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mr. Dick, friend to David's Aunt Betsey Trotwood, is my favourite character. I love how he sees people and situations clearly and easily cuts through the confusion of emotion, bigotry and ignorance. And I like how Miss Betsey accepts his word without question.

Have you listened to any of Richard Armitage’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've listened to all of Richard Armitage's performances. This is, in my opinion, his best. (With Hamlet a close second.)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The scene when Mr. Barkis dies and Peggoty is left bereft, and later when Miss Emily runs away with Steerforth, are both powerful scenes. I also love how David's infatuation for Dora develops. David's remembrance of it is hilarious.

    Any additional comments?

This is a gift from Literature Heaven: David Copperfield, read by Richard Armitage. Richard's various voices give a rich depth to the characters that you simply don't get when you read the book in print. It's a 36-hour bedtime story-telling extravaganza by, in my opinion, the best narrator of our time. I hope audible hires him again and again and again.

    "Absolutely spot-on perfect!!!!"

I have read David Copperfield at least three times over the years, along with most of Dickens, and my love of Dickens led me to Wilkie Collins...what I'm trying to say is that I'm a huge enthusiast of the author as well as this story and allow me to assure you; THIS is an absolutely AMAZING narrator who brings each individual character to life, whether it's a middle aged aunt with a starchy Scottish brogue, a creepy villian, be he ever so 'umble, a sweet young lady, or a sensitive man recalling his childhood. This production is transporting.

"A wonderful journey with Charles Dickens through the voice of Richard Armitage"

I have just bid a sad farewell, for now, to some of my favorite and most colorful literary characters, David "Trotwood" Copperfield, Betsy Trotwood, Mr. Dick, Mr. Micowber, and Mr. Pegarty, to name a few, within one of my best-loved stories, David Copperfield, written by one of my most esteemed authors, Charles Dickens, and portrayed brilliantly by one of my favorite actors, Richard Armitage. Narrating such an epic, well-known, and much beloved story is no small accomplishment, even when multiple actors and actresses lend their voice talents to the telling of the tale. In this Audible presentation, Richard Armitage has done great honor to Mr. Dickens, his story, and his characters through his faithful and delightful vocal characterizations of every character, his perfect turn of complex Victorian phrasing, and his ability to bound tightly the heart, hopes and fears of the listener to those of the characters through his own clear emotional connection to them and sense of responsibility to them. Mr. Dicken's story, as told through Mr. Armitage's narration, captured and held fast this listener's attention from start to finish, bringing the story and characters into the fullness of life within my imagination to the extent that I feel almost as if I had been a devoted friend and fellow traveller in their journey. I hope that I can look forward to enjoying many more great author's stories with
    Mr. Armitage as narrator!

    Sincerely,

    Michaelene Mossbrucker

    "Richard Armitage Voice"

I have always liked Dickens' David Copperfield. Richard Armitage's narration lends a different perspective to the characters speeches or inflections that are different than when reading the book. Among Armitage's outstanding character voices are: Barkis, Betsy Trotwood, Traddles, and Uriah Heep.

How do I do justice to this epic novel and towering performance from Richard Armitage? A truly great story with birth, death, loss, cruelty, love, loyalty and many more themes covered by a master storyteller. It's sometimes hard to believe it's one man reading with the dozens of voices, all so different and distinctive. He and Dickens made me laugh out loud and cry as well as making me angry, sad, outraged, happy and hopeful. I cannot recommend this audiobook enough and hope it's not too long before Richard Armitage does another.

    "Brought me back to Dickens"
Would you consider the audio edition of David Copperfield [Audible Studios] to be better than the print version?

Yes. Mr Armitage 'performs' rather than 'reads', so it is like watching the whole book in my mind's eye - he brings all the characters and scenes to startling life.

What other book might you compare David Copperfield [Audible Studios] to, and why?

The only proper comparison would be with another Dickens' book - and I've listened to none of these. However, I shall make a comparison with Mr Armitage's audiobook, 'Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: The Novel' because both have complex story-lines and vividly voiced characters. I would also make a comparison with his reading of Bernard Cornwell's 'Lords of the North' for similar reasons, but, oddly and unlike all his other audiobooks, Audible have not added this to their collection.

Which character – as performed by Richard Armitage – was your favourite?

So many are brilliant, it is difficult to choose: Uriah Heep, Mr Creakle, Rosa Dartle, Mr Micawber, Betsey Trotwood, Mr Peggotty, Steerforth etc. But, one character I had forgotten all about when I read the book years ago is the dwarf lady, Miss Mowcher. He has given her an unexpected Liverpudlian accent and it was an absolute delight to listen to her. On the written page, she made no impact, but, in this audiobook, she is totally memorable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is far, far too long for one sitting. It took me 10 days, listening to a chunk per day. I think there is so much going on and so many vivid moments to enjoy that, spreading it out like this is the best way to appreciate what both Dickens and Mr Armitage have achieved together.

    Any additional comments?

This reading has brought me back to an appreciation of Dickens - his characterisation, his humour, his story-telling and his ability to relate tragic scenes. Chapter 56, which describes a violent storm and the loss of 3 ships at sea, including two of the book's characters, had me sitting there with tears streaming down my face. Charles Dickens and Richard Armitage are a perfect combination. Very well done, both you guys!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book because it generates an intimacy, building an emotional attachment which then lets the listener hear and feel the story of David Copperfield's life, sharing in the despair of the young David, and the hope and joy which he somehow maintains throughout.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are many! David Copperfield's essential goodness, kindness and self reflection is interesting in the face of the cruelty shown to him when at his most vulnerable. Dickens' writing shows so much insight into this character and what shapes him and his relationships. There is vulnerability, naiveté, flaws which round the character and strength to be true to his own nature.Copperfield's relationships with the other characters allow this to be portrayed. My favourite of these, however, is not essential to this device, but is Miss Mowcher. She has to be very single minded in her attempts to overcome her disability and survive, but she also shows compassion for others and sets right any wrong she has been party to. I admired the humour in this character and Dickens' writing of the character showed empathy and respect for the rights of others, which I think surprised me given the times in which the book was written.

What does Richard Armitage bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Richard Armitage 's narration brought the book to life. His interpretation of the characters, each with their own voice, was considered and judged beautifully. If I had been reading the book,I wouldn't have had the same ability to hear the characters and I'm not sure I would have heard the humour and pathos the narrator here was able to convey. David Copperfield's voice was given an intimacy, of sharing his personal journey with the listener, drawing you in and including you in the development of the character and his story. Richard Armitage does have a voice that could be listened to all day, which helps! Also - when I am reading I'm very guilty of skipping ahead for little clues and then being annoyed at myself for spoiling the suspense!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud several times throughout listening to the book, but also felt deeply for the young David Copperfield and all his trials. I was by turn irritated, angry and amused as each character played their part in the story. Towards the end of the book I did cry ,I have to confess, when David and Agnes finally reveal their true feelings to one another . I feel that the narrator's pace, tone and interpretation worked so well with the writing to enrich this particular part of the story.

    Any additional comments?

I listened to this book whilst driving to visit my elderly father. My visits there can often be stressful and listening to this book was like a kind of therapy! It distracted me, soothed me ,absorbed me and calmed me on my journeys. I am not someone given to reviewing books, films or anything else for that matter, but thank you Audible, for this book and thank you Richard Armitage for the pleasure of your narration of the story.

I've spent a holiday in Rhodes listening to this masterpiece of a novel. I am in Lindos, which is a magnificent location dominated by its Acropolis. I'm a huge fan of Charles Dickens, who is a master storyteller and a genius at creating extraordinary and memorable characters. The supremely talented and very versatile Richard Armitage gives us a really impressive interpretation of all the characters and does full justice to Dickens' masterpiece. It's an artistic/literary 'marriage' made in heaven in my opinion, and I hope Richard can be convinced to do more narrations for Audible in the future.

This is probably the best known of Dickens' novels and this unabridged reading is absolutely first class. T he narrator manages to bring very well-known characters to new life. The accents are varied: the basic narration ( David's voice) is convincing both as a young boy and mature man. It's just a wonderful listen. The most difficult thing with Dickens is bringing out the humour, the Micawbers and the redoubtable Miss Mowcher made me laugh out loud. Imagine Lily Savage and Lenny Henry! The sad parts are sad, the funny parts are funny and the dramatic bits are totally convincing. Buy it! You'll listen to it again and again.

    Any additional comments?

I have tried so many times to read Dickens and have given up every time. So I decided to try an audiobok and I'm so glad I did. Richard Armitage's sublime performance has opened up a whole new world of storytelling for me. The vast array of voices and accents, the comic interpretation of some characters, the unbearable sadness of others were all amazingly good and I was often mesmerized by the performance. The pacing of the narration and the development of the characterisation were pitch perfect. Some male narrators find it hard to 'find a female voice' but Richard Armitage managed to find several wonderful ones.At the end of this very long book I was left feeling bereft, as if I had said goodbye to a very old and much-loved friend. I was left longing for more and so I shall definitely try some more Dickens. This 5* performance is definitely worthy of awards/prizes and I hope Audible will commission Richard to read more classic novels.

A wonderful, sensitive and amusing reading or rather all embracing performance of this iconic book. I love Dickens but sometimes get a bit bogged down with the density of the language. This reading has convinced me that his writing comes alive when it is read aloud and all those varied characters are brought to life. Listening has even made the process of reading his work myself much easier .
