Story
Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife.

In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare stages the workings of love in unexpected ways. In the woods outside Athens, two young men and two young women sort themselves into couples - but not before they form first one love triangle, and then another. The king and queen of fairyland, Oberon and Titania, battle over custody of an orphan boy. Oberon uses magic to make Titania fall in love with a weaver named Bottom, in an effort to distract Titania from the custody battle.

Story
Star of stage, film, and television Alan Cumming delivers a virtuoso performance playing every role in the National Theatre of Scotland's bold presentation of Shakespeare's chilling tale of desire, ambition, and the supernatural. This radical reimagining of one of Shakespeare's most deeply psychological plays is set in a psychiatric unit in which Cumming is the lone patient. Channeling the story of Macbeth, he is inhabited in turn by each of the characters of the drama, including some of Shakespeare's most complex and troubled creations.

In Othello, Shakespeare creates powerful drama from a marriage between the exotic Moor Othello and the Venetian lady Desdemona. Shakespeare builds many differences into his hero and heroine, including race, age, and cultural background. In Richard III, Shakespeare invites us on a moral holiday. The play draws us to identify with Richard and his fantasy of total control of self and domination of others. Not yet king at the start of the play, Richard presents himself as an enterprising villain as he successfully plans to dispose of his brother, Clarence. Richard achieves similar success in conquering the woman he chooses to marry. He carves a way to the throne through assassination and executions.

Story
This shattering drama of isolation and loss is one of the greatest tragedies in world literature. King Lear of Britain has three daughters: the hard-hearted Goneril and Regan, and the good and gentle Cordelia. He determines to divide his kingdom between them, giving the largest share to she who can say she loves him the best. Lear's tragic lack of judgment and self-knowledge is paralleled by the blindness of the loyal Gloucester who is persuaded to reject his virtuous son, Edgar, in favor of the villainous Edmund.

Story
Hamlet, Shakespeare's most popular, and perhaps most puzzling play, follows the form of a "revenge tragedy", in which the hero, Hamlet, seeks vengeance against his father’s murderer, his uncle Claudius, now the king of Denmark. Much of its fascination, however, lies in its uncertainties. This new full-cast recording - based on the most respected edition of Shakespeare's classic - expertly produced by the Folger Theatre, is perfect for students, teachers, and the everyday listener.

Macbeth: A Novel brings the intricacy and grit of the historical thriller to Shakespeare’s tale of political intrigue, treachery, and murder. In this full-length novel written exclusively for audio, authors A. J. Hartley and David Hewson rethink literature’s most infamous married couple, grounding them in a medieval Scotland whose military and political upheavals are as stark and dramatic as the landscape in which they are played.

When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Well done, great performance, held to text
The performance was true to the text, with care. The musical interludes were modern, as were some of the sound effects (e.g. the Herald was, cleverly, a radio news bulletin), but they worked.
The actors were extremely talented. Each was true to his/her character. It was my first full hearing of Othello (although I had seen an updated dramatization called "O" on the screen). I read along and this production was easy to follow in the text. I highly recommend this production for entertainment and education.

Good Way to Understand Shakespeare
This BBC series of dramatized Shakespeare's plays is very good. It's so much easier to understand when there are multiple voices, almost as good as a play.

Shattering Performance of a Magnificent Play
Othello is my favorite of all of William Shakespeare's plays I've experienced. Of all of his plays, and indeed his final and greatest four tragedies (Othello, Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth), Othello is among the most deeply personal and intimate. Why it's not as lucky on audio (or video) as many others is baffling to me. Of all of the Audible editions of Othello, this is far and away the one that moved me the most. Also, unlike many of the other plays from this BBC series, the performance is quite complete other than a few minor cuts.
The performance itself is emotionally shattering, the leads in particular completely committed to eliciting the full effect of Shakespeare's dialogue. Anastasia Hille brings a wonderful balance of intelligence, strength, and innocence to the role of Desdemona, not allowing the character to fade into the background. James Frain gives a tour-de-force performance of one of the most deliciously evil and brilliant villains ever written. Right from his opening dialogue one can tell he's already in complete control of the situation and always several steps ahead of everyone else. Unlike many other performances, however, Frain understands that the character of Iago should not completely dominate every single scene of the play. He allows room for Ray Fearon to shine as Othello, and shine he does. Fearon is completely believable as the Moor, noble and powerful, but also vulnerable and trusting to a fault. The fact that he plays Othello with a confident restraint rather than melodrama makes the ending all the more tragic. In the final scenes of the play, Fearon speaks in a hushed whisper of a voice, almost completely devoid of affectation. Because of this, I could feel the world around this once confident, powerful man come crumbling down around him. Smaller roles, too, are well-performed.
As for the technical aspects of the audiobook, the sound is quite good, though I wonder if Audible could re-upload it in stereo for full effect. Music and sound effects are not overbearing, and there are some nice touches in direction, such as actual singing when appropriate. To me, not only is it the finest Othello on audio, but also easily the best performance of the BBC Radio Collection series. Absolutely recommended!
