Publisher's Summary

When Autobiography of a Yogi first appeared in 1946, it was acclaimed as a landmark work in its field. The New York Times hailed it as "a rare account". Newsweek pronounced it "fascinating". The San Francisco Chronicle declared, "Yogananda presents a convincing case for yoga, and those who 'came to scoff' may remain 'to pray." Today it is still one of the most widely read and respected books ever published on the wisdom of the East.

This audio edition, featuring Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley's masterful narration, contains the complete text of Paramahansa Yogananda's life story, an absorbing account of a singular search for Truth. Yogananda describes his experiences with modern-day saints and illuminated masters of India, and presents a definitive introduction to the whole science and philosophy of Yoga.

"New ways to look at religion/spirituality"

I really enjoyed this book. It forced me to reconsider a lot of how I viewed spirituality by making me look through a perspective so different from my own.

    "Great segue to kriya yoga"

I had started Reading the Kindle format several times but found it difficult to get beyond a few chapters. Ben Kingsley's narration brings the book alive keeping the reader engaged through to the end of this important work.

    "truth injecting"

anyone on a spiritual path can only profit from this book, read or listen to it often. Anyone not on a spiritual path should not see reading or listening to this book as an accident encouter. The truths expressed in this book are more valuable than gold or diamonds

"I couldn't wait to listen any chance I got."

First, Ben Kingsley is an absolute pleasure and joy to listen to and for a work as long as this, delivers a flawless performance. I never tired of hearing him, nor this story. Following that, I looked forward to every moment of 'down time' (folding laundry, doing dishes, driving, walking my dogs) where I could absorb more of this incredible autobiography! It is so well written and inspiring on so many levels!

"Excellent book,a great performance by Ben Kingsley"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The book itself and the performance are great but this is a book that is better read than listening to. Much of the content might be lost since most people cannot listen to the entire book in one sitting.

What did you like best about this story?

Yogananda is a very inspiring figure and guru. I purchased the audiobook to listen to in the car and as others say in their reviews the book is calming and pleasant. I own the printed book and have read it firsthand so the audio book is more of a complimentary listen while I drive.

    Any additional comments?

Ben Kingsley does an excellent job reading this book. He is a professional and does not drone through the reading. Much of the content is heartfelt and you can hear his enjoyment throughout. Don't listen to the other reviews about the reading, he does an excellent job. The Kingsley version is much better to listen to than the other.. All the inflections are correct and there is emotion in the words as Ben reads them. If you cannot read the book, this version is the next best thing.
