    "A well read classic"

It is unfortunate that the previous reviewer would choose to lower the average rating with a joke. It is hard to read this book and not feel anything. Yogananda was a generous soul who dedicated his life to helping bring a valuable and universal teaching to all of us. Ben Kingsley gives the book a beautiful and sensitive reading. Many times I forget that it is not Yogananda himself speaking. This audiobook is highly recommended to any open minded person of any spiritual belief.

"WORDS ARE INADEQUATE TO EXPRESS HOW TERRIFIC"

Little did I know when I was given this book over 30 years ago, that it would have such a positive impact on my life. Yogananda has written one of the most extraordinary books on the subject of spirituality ever written that could only come from one who is truly an illumined being. The book has remained a spiritual classic for decades not only for its universal truths expounded upon through Yogananda's insights and training, but also for its entertaining and spellbinding reading. This book is responsible for changing many people's lives and views on the universality of religion. It is a MUST READ or LISTEN TO for anyone interested in metaphysics. I couldn't recommend it more highly. Ben Kingsley is excellent in his award winning reading of this superb book.

    "Beautifully written literature"

This book was written over 50 years ago. The writer has wonderful command of the english language, He is prolific, highly descriptive and inspiring. I have listened to over 50 books. I have never heard a book so wonderfully written. The writer is lyrical and had a unique way of phrasing his story. He does not preach his philosophy, he mearly states the facts as he sees them. You may not believe his teachings but you will have a greater understanding not only of his but of other religons. Do not listen to this to buy or not buy his religion. Read it for the shear enjoyment of the writing and the wonderful, delightful story of an extraodinary life. Sir Ben kingsley's voice is soothing and does justice to this highly entertaining piece of literature.

"This book will make you think"

Well, well. What a story. Is it all true? I am convinced that the author is truthful and has descibed his life as he truly experienced it. But I dont know if this is an objective truth.

Much of his story tracks with what other swamis have written. And after reading a few books on this subject, I have started to wonder about the way of life they describe - much of it must be true?

I found the first part of the book a little hard to enjoy (this is where an audio books helps, since it takes no effort to keep listening, even if it is less interesting). The language was too flowery and, sorry to say, boring. But after that part of the book is done, the rest is mostly fascinating.

Having completed the book and having re-listened to many parts, my understanding and admiration of this way of life and the persons that follow it has much increased. It is not at all like the religion many of us (in the west) are exposed to through the media, or our local churches/mosques/temples. IMO much more honest and principled that many religious practioners.

It has also helped me understand India much better. In the west we are raised with Socrates, Plato and Aristotle's way of looking at life. In India people grow up with stories like this (Bhagavad Gita and the Vedas). Hence a much different outlook on life.

If you are interested in such subjects, you must read this book.

    "What can I say"

I agree with all previous. Many times it is as if the reader is talking to you. So many references to Kriya Yoga, that I now am curious about the technique.

    Om!

"This is an absolutely fascinating book!"

This is an absolutely fascinating book!. most beautifully written It offers a theory of the workings of the universe which unlike many others has been tested and proved right by many ancient seers and modern seekers of truth, Here many religious dogmas and new age "mysticisms" lose their grip on the open discriminative mind. Read and Think!!!

    Thank You Paramahansa Yogananda...

"On my mother's bookself since 1972"

I used to walk by this book on my mother's bookself and I never picked it up to read. I can't believe my parents read this book in the 60's because it was so far ahead of it's time. In the land of Gandhi, this author writes about his life and the intricate ceremonies, and insights of Hindus. I was blown away, and will continue to return to the book for the stories.
