Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)

Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure. Best of all, the immediacy of Wood’s energetic reading sweeps listeners up and makes them feel as though they’re along for the ride, as Huck and Jim push their raft toward freedom.

Critic reviews

"Elijah Wood’s performance is my nominee for the Narrators’ Hall of Fame. Wood’s unself-conscious reading doesn’t sound like a reading at all. He creates an entire world filled with people who cross class and color lines. His accents range from British to faux-British to all manner of regional affectations, twangs, and drawls. Wood’s delivery makes Mark Twain’s delicious wit and twisty language sound completely natural, especially as Huck invents plausible words to suit the moment. The journey down the Mississippi with Huck and Jim is pure pleasure, as the boy who won’t be "sivilized" and the runaway slave encounter scoundrels, slip out of scrapes, and invent outrageous tales. The listening couldn’t be better if Huck read the story himself." (AudioFile Magazine)

Marvelous

Elijah Wood does an absolutely fantastic job reading one of the greatest classics in American literature. Often times, I would forget that he was narrating (being totally drawn into the characters as he brought them to life). Absolutely first rate! I wholeheartedly recommend this version of Twain's masterpiece!

Boring story but important themes

I never read this book as a kid so I thought I’d read it as an adult given it’s importance held by many. The language and mentality of the time was difficult to listen to. However, I do understand the importance of seeing someone like Huck work through his childhood in light of slavery in his time. The first half of the book was interesting but the second half just got very boring and I had to speed up the narration. I’m glad I finally read this book so I can participate in discussions surrounding it but I would probably not read again.

Elijah Wood knocks it out of the park

This is a classic story of historical fiction that still resonates with audiences over a hundred years later. The audiobook is presented uncensored with a fantastic narration by Elijah Wood. Huck Finn is a very deep and likable character. Much of the book focuses on his inner conflict as he struggles between what he thinks is right versus what the adults around him are doing. If you're an Audible subscriber, there's no excuse not to have this gem in your library.

Captivating adventure, beginning to end

Take a trip with Huck Finn, you will not be disappointed. An amazing journey, interesting anecdotes, and lively characters. Elijah Woods did an amazing job narrating this classic tale by Mark Twain 👏.

I read this when I was a young boy, and now as a middle aged man, still love it, maybe even more now. I never realized how bat shit crazy Tom Sawyer was, you'll know what I mean in the final chapters of this book. I swore he would be the end of poor Jim.

I forgot how funny this is!

I read this book decades ago, but decided to listen to it. First, the narrator is so talented that I am going to search for other books he has narrated so I can enjoy them “coming alive” as well. Second, Mark Twain was an amazing man who unabashedly put social ills and prejudices in the spotlight to show their evils. Third, “socially conscious” folks (of which I consider myself one) need to NOT get outraged by the depictions of women and minorities. Realize the year in which this was written and how Twain made the bigots the actual butts of the jokes. This book deserves to be hailed as a classic and the narrator as an artist!

Why did it tell us not to expect a plot?

Terribly silly, but a good book no less, can't wait to read it in school.
