Editorial reviews

Elijah Wood’s performance is my nominee for the Narrators’ Hall of Fame. Wood’s unself-conscious reading doesn’t sound like a reading at all. He creates an entire world filled with people who cross class and color lines. His accents range from British to faux-British to all manner of regional affectations, twangs, and drawls. Wood’s delivery makes Mark Twain’s delicious wit and twisty language sound completely natural, especially as Huck invents plausible words to suit the moment. The journey down the Mississippi with Huck and Jim is pure pleasure, as the boy who won’t be "sivilized" and the runaway slave encounter scoundrels, slip out of scrapes, and invent outrageous tales. The listening couldn’t be better if Huck read the story himself.

Publisher's summary

Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)

Audible is pleased to announce the premiere of an exciting new series, Audible Signature Classics, featuring literature’s greatest stories, performed by accomplished stars handpicked for their ability to interpret each work in a new and refreshing way. The first book in the series is Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, performed by Elijah Wood.

Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this brand new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure. Best of all, the immediacy of Wood’s energetic reading sweeps listeners up and makes them feel as though they’re along for the ride, as Huck and Jim push their raft toward freedom.

Stay tuned for more one-of-a-kind performances from actors Kenneth Branagh, David Hyde Pierce, Leelee Sobieski, and more, only from Audible Signature Classics.

Huckleberry Finn and Elijah Wood shine together!

Would you consider the audio edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: A Signature Performance by Elijah Wood to be better than the print version?

I purchased Huckleberry Finn to listen to in the car with my daughter. I had to read it in high school and learned quite a bit from it. Elijah Wood's reading of Mr. Twains classic is wonderful. He is Huck. My daughter is ten and she enjoyed the book very much and it gave us the chance to talk about all the different social issues of the times. The most important of course being slavery. Women, children, and the poor had few rights and were treated wrong too. Nothing close to horrible abuses of slavery. She would get all fired up, I would have to stop the book and talk about whatever the issue was before we could go on. She learned very much about that point in history and looks forward to reading more by Mr. Twain. I would also purchase any other audio book read by Elijah Wood, he does such a great job vocalizing the characters. With his reading and Mr. Twain's writing you get such vivid feel for the book. In this case I think it was better than having it in print.

Epic adventure

I loved Elijah Wood's reading of this classical story.
Huck gets away of most situations thanks to his behavioral intelligence, a way to say that it's not all about education at school, it's about learning to live in real life and cope with people and it's about enjoying every bit of it. Yet, it's fun to see how what he learned at school eventually proves useful: reading and writing are the most important skills one can learn.

Slow plot line but always interesting

This book is a great sequel to Tom Sawyer. Because of what twain says in the preface about the local dialects used in the time period before the civil war, twain has nothing to apologize for. Thoroughly enjoyed it, only an idiot would ban thus book I am surprised anyone would find this book offensive. This is a child's book not intended for politics.

Great unabridged reading of a classic!

I remember listening to my high school English teacher read passages of Huck Finn. The vernacular of the day for the various characters made it challenging to read in some parts, interrupting the flow of the story. It’s the difference of reading Shakespeare and hearing Shakespeare - it’s much richer and complete read aloud. Listening to this book really brought out the story and characters - Elijah Wood does an amazing reading.

Worth Every Second

Amazingly, I had never read Huck Finn before but when I saw it free on Audible and narrated by Elijah Wood I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did. His performances are fantastic. The story is an apt portrayal of human nature. There’s a reason Mark Twain is famous (duh). I’d give it six stars!
