Earphones Award Winner (AudioFile Magazine)

Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure. Best of all, the immediacy of Wood’s energetic reading sweeps listeners up and makes them feel as though they’re along for the ride, as Huck and Jim push their raft toward freedom.

Critic reviews

"Elijah Wood’s performance is my nominee for the Narrators’ Hall of Fame. Wood’s unself-conscious reading doesn’t sound like a reading at all. He creates an entire world filled with people who cross class and color lines. His accents range from British to faux-British to all manner of regional affectations, twangs, and drawls. Wood’s delivery makes Mark Twain’s delicious wit and twisty language sound completely natural, especially as Huck invents plausible words to suit the moment. The journey down the Mississippi with Huck and Jim is pure pleasure, as the boy who won’t be "sivilized" and the runaway slave encounter scoundrels, slip out of scrapes, and invent outrageous tales. The listening couldn’t be better if Huck read the story himself." (AudioFile Magazine)

Elijah Wood, what a great performance it brought the characters to life.

Any additional comments?

I am sure I raised a few eyebrows when listening to this book while trying on clothes at the store, I found myself laughing out loud. I love Huck and the trouble that he and Tom Sawyer find themselves in at the end. I have always enjoyed this story but have only ever seen the movies of it. However, it has now gone on my must listen to again shelf. So good.

Wonderful narration by Elijah Wood

Would you listen to Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: A Signature Performance by Elijah Wood again? Why?

Yes I would listen again. It's a classic tale. I laughed out loud at some of Twain's phraseology. I had never read the actual book, but I am so glad I listened to it. I think the dialog was so great between Huck and Jim, especially.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: A Signature Performance by Elijah Wood?

One of the most memorable moments was when Huck and Jim were on the raft, and they bonded while floating down the river. They both learned that each other was not so bad.

Have you listened to any of Elijah Wood’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I hve not listened to any of Mr. Wood's other performances. I have seen his Hobbit movies and thought he was great in them as well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to the book mostly while out for my daily walk. So, I got about 45 minute sessions. I probably would not listen to any book all in one sitting.

Rediscovering a classic

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. We bought it for a long car trip and encountered some resistance from our older son (14), who did not want to be "forced" to listen to something just because it was a "classic." However, once we had listened for about ten minutes he was hooked.

Any additional comments?

As anyone who has read it or read about it knows, the "n" word is used liberally, along with epithets and descriptions that are no longer acceptable (e.g., "Injun"). To me, the recorded version was all the more jarring for hearing some of the language spoken out loud. It provided an opening for talking about books in context, and why an author would choose to use words that, in another context, have been used to hurt or demean.
