"Equal parts business primer, Oprah-spirited coming-of-age memoir and sneaky PR brochure for herself...Corcoran has produced a likable and worthwhile book, an honorable contribution with heart." (Publishers Weekly)
"A practial, funny compendium of advice that should stick with any reader." (USA Today)
"Part memoir, part rough guide to business and 100 percent in-your-face glee." (Working Mother)
I was looking for an educational book on real estate and real estate investing, however, this did not hit the mark. This book was, however, an interesting rags to riches story and entertained my wife and I during a long trip.
The story is told perfectly by the author. You can almost picture the family and her wise mother! Lot's of good snippets of information in there to be had, and highly entertaining too. This book had me really thinking about different ways to use the information it offered, but laughs kept me hooked, I'll be listening to this again quite soon. My thanks to the Author, another job well done! A chuckle a minute.
I can't express how much I enjoyed this book. The narration was wonderful. If you listen to this bok and are not inspired as well as entertained and touched emotionally, you are a brick. I loved it!
Found this book while doing a search for titles relating to real estate. Turned out to be a long rambling story without much substance. Reminds me a lot of the Robert Kiyosaki "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" narrative but without the helpful ideas. I think that the fact that one reviewer called it Oprah-spirited says it all. This book is a fat, waste of time.
It's filled with wonderful stories of her rise in the real estate business. Some lessons are applicable some not really. I would recommend this book, but for some light reading/listening. It's a nice break from some of the more heavy duty material out there. She does a great job narrating her book.
Satisfactory on all levels!!! Entertaining, inspirational, idea generating and valuable lessons shared. Well written and well read by the author!
I loved the story of when Barbara met the would be "Condo Queen" - for Barbara's impersonations as much as the story itself! And the same for when Barbara met Donald Trump for the first time. I think the greatest lesson(s) for me may have come from the 88 condo's story.
It was definitely a book I wanted to listen to in it's entirety in one sitting. It was a challenge to break-up my listening so that I could savor it! I'm looking forward to listening to it again!
My first audible.com book. I am so pleased, I just ordered 3 different titles as gifts for friends and another two for my listening library. Great for the morning and evening train commute!
This is one of the few Audible books that I've listened to multiple times. The humor, the performance, and the story -- the underlying story and advice -- have gotten me through. From subsidized housing to the beginnings of an export management business in five years, while raising four kids by myself. On Friday I was offered a contract to represent a company from another state, the whole nine yards. Yep. And you know what? It was because I decided to do just what the book title states: Use What I've Got. I think I've listened to this book at least four times. I pull it out when I start getting disheartened, or having major doubts, or I want to disown my teenagers. ;o) Between the chuckles from the stories about Ms. Corcoran's raising or the twists and turns of the evolution of her business... it just shows how in the end you never know where it's all going to lead but if you give up too early, well, that'd just be a darn shame because look what she accomplished! And her voice, when she reads it... Hilarious!!! What a great voice! NYC through and through!
I am so glad SHE reads this book! She really brought the stories alive. It's almost like she's sitting there at the table, coffee cup in hand, telling the stories to you. Just a riot!
I'd say there are a few insights I re-gain each time I listen to this audible book: For example, my kids will be fine. I've tried to teach them similar things all along, not unlike Ms. Corcoran's mom. If we can get through these teenage years without my having to kill them or at least ground them until they're 30 (and the first one is leaving in exactly 2 weeks for marine boot camp, so that's one down and three to go!) , we'll all be fine. Second, you do NOT have to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth to do SOMETHING for yourself. You just have figure out what you've already got to work with and keep at it, find the people who are going to support you and encourage you and learn from everyone you can, and then make incremental changes. And I'm doing that! I re-listen to this book more and more the closer I get to achieving my business goals!
And yet, this is not a handsy-holdsy, let's-all-sing-coom-bay-yah type of self-help book. Don't think that for a minute! It's very funny, great to put on for an afternoon of cleaning out that one room of the house you've been putting off... You can get through it and laugh and recharge your batteries with this book while you do. Thanks, Audible, because I never would've found this book or enjoyed it as much or as often otherwise!
