Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Like the best social dynamics professor you never had, Malcolm Gladwell deconstructs a wide range of phenomena (from the reduction of crime in New York to the rise of Sesame Street) to deliver a fascinating understanding of how "social epidemics" spread. And while author/narrators are often a mixed blessing, Gladwell is so friendly and well-paced that I was actually disappointed when The Tipping Point was over. - Ed Walloga

Publisher's summary

From the bestselling author of The Bomber Mafia: discover Malcolm Gladwell's breakthrough debut and explore the science behind viral trends in business, marketing, and human behavior.

The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

“A wonderful page-turner about a fascinating idea that should affect the way every thinking person looks at the world.” —Michael Lewis

Critic reviews

"History takes on a whole new perspective as he describes events of early America that specifically follow his theories of 'selling the public on an idea' and 'social epidemics.' Feedback from market mavericks further substantiates Gladwell's viewpoints." (AudioFile)

"Gladwell, a New Yorker staff writer, offers an incisive and piquant theory of social dynamics that is bound to provoke a paradigm shift in our understanding of mass behavioral change." (Booklist)

"Hip and hopeful, The Tipping Point is like the idea it describes: concise, elegant, but packed with social power. A book for anyone who cares about how society works and how we can make it better." (George Stephanopoulos)

Extremely thought provoking

If you like objectivity and serious explanations for compelling problems Gladwell does an excellent job explaining the underlying reasons for some of modern life's most serious issues. Really enjoyed this.

A book for everyone

I read this book during my initial years of corporate career. But as you grow old you need to remember common human behavior patterns and understand people how they react in different situations. This book is a good manual to understand how you can make a good sale, how you can become famous or to understand human behavior.

Gladwell is a captivating writer

Would you consider the audio edition of The Tipping Point to be better than the print version?

In the sense that it is easier to "read," yes. The print version would taken me forever to read and I wouldn't grasp the general understanding of the book as easy; I study book, I don't read them; a book like this, I would want to take notes, re-read, and take my time... who has time??? But, using my commutes as listening time, allows me to listen more than once and jot down key concepts at traffic lights!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Tipping Point?

Understanding the epidemic spread of ideas and how people, the ideas themselves, and their context act to make them epidemological... not only interesting, but also useful for business... and life!

Which scene was your favorite?

Learning about Gore Co. was very interesting for me and also about the beginning of the American Revolution.

If you could give The Tipping Point a new subtitle, what would it be?

I think the current subtitle is perfect!

A book that started a revolution

Having read this many years ago, I've come back to it in Audio book format for a refresher in the basic concepts. Many of the learnings have manifested in public health, educating, marketing and other fields that seek to alter social behaviors for both good and dubious ends. I heartily recommend this book to those seeking to understand trends and those that fuel them.
