"A Cross between the Dalai Lama's ethics and Stephen Covey's Seven Habits, The Diamond Cutter will have you gardening a path to the bank." (Amazon.com review)
"Here is wise advice and counsel on an ethical and prosperous way of being in the workday world based on Tibetan Buddhist principles." (Spirituality and Health)
I teach Buddhism and have done so for 30 years. The essence of the Buddha's teaching is that suffering is reduced by accepting things as they are. This book is akin to the new age "classic" The Secret. In The Diamond Cutter, the author provides a number of very specific inner and outer behaviors that will supposedly and magically change reality to fit a person's particular desires. The world simply does not work like this and this book bears almost no resemblance to the teachings of the Buddha.
Really, even though I am not a Buddhist, listening to this book completely changed my perspective on running the business in general. It can be done differently and enjoyably and I cant wait to put what I learned here into practice. Thank you Geshe Michael.
A great look at business ethics and their effects through a Buddhist lens. A number of fantastic principles are discussed as well as interesting facts about the diamond businesses.
A book for every business person, regardless of your beliefs.
My only criticism was in the last section of the book, where famous and pseudo-famous people tell stories of their implementation of the principles and its effect on their lives and businesses; it seemed a little self promoting and a bit inconsistent with the way the rest of the the book was laid out.
Michael Roach, the author, received the Presidential Scholars Medallion from President Richard Nixon and graduated from Princeton University in 1974. He is an ordained Buddhist monk and received the geshe degree in 1995 from the Sera Monastery in India, being the first Westerner to do so.
Roach was also one of the founders at Andin International, an international diamond business in in New York, which grew from a $50,000 investment into a $100,000,000 business.
This book contains a perfect explanation on one of the most important teachings in Buddhism. If you are looking for a book that can change your life and unlock your maximum potential THIS IS IT!
The wisdom in this book is an ancient one. it comes from many religions and is well expressed within. The unique perspective of this book comes from applying it in a business setting. However we spend so much of our lives at business it essentially becomes a human setting. You will learn practical explicit steps and mindsets to keep to reap the rewards of a profitable business. Turns out that comes from your capacity to give to those around you.
I've just finished listening and learning from this book and it has already helped improve my mentality. I firmly believe my life is about to change dramaticly for the better because I am applying these teachings. I am so grateful to have been recommended this book because it has just opened the door I have been looking for.
The writer does his book a disservice through self narration. His voice is very flat and monotone. He often pauses at the wrong point in the sentence, makes digesting new concepts even more difficult. But I think material is good. Perhaps I'll buy the book in pulp.
Something more along the spiritual realm. Either that or self help like Tony Robbins. Dave Ramsey, Stephen Covey, Tolle, Chopra.
The book is misrepresented. It is spiritual 101. The book has more to do with the diamond business than anything else. I didn't feel it's description was remotely representative of the book. To the point I can't even finish it.
I'm so glad I was recommended this book. Thank you for making this info available.
A lovely bridge between deep spiritual understanding and practical knowledge. Geshe Michael Roach has remarkable clarity explaining ideas that I had previously dismissed due to lack of understanding. A powerful tool towards understanding abundance and money as part of a spiritual life.
