Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The clearest and best book out there to get you on the path to riches. This one’s special!”—Jim Cramer, host of CNBC’s Mad Money

“Great tools for anyone wanting to dabble in the stock market.”—USA Today

Phil Town is a very wealthy man, but he wasn’t always. In fact, he was living on a salary of $4,000 a year when some well-timed advice launched him down a highway of investing self-education that revealed what the true “rules” are and how to make them work in one’s favor. Chief among them, of course, is Rule #1: “Don’t lose money.”

In this updated edition to the #1 national bestseller, you’ll learn more of Phil’s fresh, think-outside-the-box rules, including:
• Don’t diversify
• Only buy a stock when it’s on sale
Think long term—but act short term to maximize your return
• And most of all, beat the big investors at their own game by using the tools designed for them!

As Phil demonstrates in this book, giant mutual funds can’t help but regress to the mean—and as we’ve all learned in recent years, that mean could be very disappointing indeed. Fortunately, Rule #1 takes listeners step-by-step through a do-it-yourself process, equipping even the biggest investing-phobes with the tools they need to make quantum leaps toward financial security—regardless of where the market is headed.

Critic reviews

“Town's investment guide is manna from heaven… engaging and accessible… Town’s ability to break down that philosophy into a detailed, step-by-step program that can be understood by any reader with basic math skills is unique… will leave readers feeling empowered and ready to manage their money themselves.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A refreshing departure from those boring investing books… If you're tired of being shut out of how exactly the rich guys on Wall Street make money, this important book will teach you how to run with the bulls. It's priceless.” —Elizabeth MacDonald, Senior Editor at Forbes Magazine; regular, “Forbes on Fox”"]

Rule #1 is probably one of the most inclusive, no nonsense, fundamental books about investing in the stock market I’ve ever read. This book is a must-read for everyone; from beginner students of the market to super know-it-alls.” —Danielle Hughes, President and CEO, Divine Capital Markets LLC

Investing Bible

I have gone through dozens of books on investing lately and this is by far the best. The entire process of finding, buying and selling exceptional stocks is outlined step-by-step. This is not about some magic formula, this about finding stocks that have meaning to you, and would be proud to own, then doing a little homework to determine whether the stock meets fundamental criteria he believes crucial to growing companies. He shows you exactly where to find this information and the tools he uses to get in and out of market. A lot of his ideals are based on those of Warren Buffet and Benjamin Graham but updated for the modern age of internet.

After being a somewhat of a day trader over past couple of years, I believe this is a great compromise between old school buy hold and short term investing. I cant wait to get started...

Value Investing

If you are looking for a book to help you take control of your own financial destiny then I can't think of one better than Rule #1. Take Phil Town up on his offer to show you, step by step, how to invest like Warren Buffet and Benjamin Graham.
Hey,I am never going to have the time to be a day trader. Neither am I willing to sit back and hope that my mutual fund manager does better than last year. Instead, this book offers a no-nonsense approach based on finding great values and waiting for your opportunity to buy them at a discount. I was immediately impressed by the logic behind this method, though I had lots of questions. Questions like: "How do you know what the true value of a company is?" and "How do you know when to make your move?" Sure enough, all of my questions were answered by the time I finished the book.
I am frankly excited about trying this for myself. I see very little downside (after all, rule number one is "don't lose anything!") and I see the upside as being very, very good indeed.

Great Investing Fundamentals

This book is a great place to get started with investing on your own and taking ownership over your own money in the stock market. The principles taught in this book hail from the investing mindsets and philosophies of some of the greatest investors to have lived, but explained in a way that is easy to understand for the every day person.

I was excited about investing when I first started doing it in the way you're excited about a new hobby you've found. This book has only made me more excited to be in the market and has given me knowledge and tools I definitely needed to make more informed and rational decisions.

Great Content. Poor naration, story.

Would you consider the audio edition of Rule #1 to be better than the print version?

Don't have the print version

What other book might you compare Rule #1 to and why?

James Cramer - Mad Money
A different but not that different approach to investing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

IMPORTANT - this is NOT a review but a REMARK!

Hi,

FYI - there are 2 different versions of this audio book:
• one narrated by the author himself (Phil Town)
• and one narrated by Marc Cashman
(they are both available at Audible)

But that's NOT the only difference:
• the one by the author as a length of 4h 23min
• while the one by Marc Cashman as a length of 11h 29min !!! (that's about almost 7 hours more!)

Can anyone explain why the difference in length of the same book?

Thanks in advance for any reply!

PS:
It seems that the one narrated by the author has a chapter mismatch.
The one narrated by Marc Cashman coincides with the chapter in the book itself

Hard to take in like this.

This is a great book but I think it would be better as a paper copy book

Working the system and loving it

Second time around listening to the book. I even went and bought the physical book so I could see the numbers. I researched Phil and he is the real deal. He does not sell a scam. He really is trying to help and if you are a boomer you better start reading and learning his book. It will be about the only chance you will have to make it in retirement. Everyone after Boomers you really, really better learn it. Thanks Phil.

Oh yea, don't get clever and try to beat his system... you will lose, I have.
