Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The clearest and best book out there to get you on the path to riches. This one’s special!”—Jim Cramer, host of CNBC’s Mad Money

“Great tools for anyone wanting to dabble in the stock market.”—USA Today

Phil Town is a very wealthy man, but he wasn’t always. In fact, he was living on a salary of $4,000 a year when some well-timed advice launched him down a highway of investing self-education that revealed what the true “rules” are and how to make them work in one’s favor. Chief among them, of course, is Rule #1: “Don’t lose money.”

In this updated edition to the #1 national bestseller, you’ll learn more of Phil’s fresh, think-outside-the-box rules, including:
• Don’t diversify
• Only buy a stock when it’s on sale
Think long term—but act short term to maximize your return
• And most of all, beat the big investors at their own game by using the tools designed for them!

As Phil demonstrates in this book, giant mutual funds can’t help but regress to the mean—and as we’ve all learned in recent years, that mean could be very disappointing indeed. Fortunately, Rule #1 takes listeners step-by-step through a do-it-yourself process, equipping even the biggest investing-phobes with the tools they need to make quantum leaps toward financial security—regardless of where the market is headed.

Critic reviews

“Town's investment guide is manna from heaven… engaging and accessible… Town’s ability to break down that philosophy into a detailed, step-by-step program that can be understood by any reader with basic math skills is unique… will leave readers feeling empowered and ready to manage their money themselves.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A refreshing departure from those boring investing books… If you're tired of being shut out of how exactly the rich guys on Wall Street make money, this important book will teach you how to run with the bulls. It's priceless.” —Elizabeth MacDonald, Senior Editor at Forbes Magazine; regular, “Forbes on Fox”"]

Rule #1 is probably one of the most inclusive, no nonsense, fundamental books about investing in the stock market I’ve ever read. This book is a must-read for everyone; from beginner students of the market to super know-it-alls.” —Danielle Hughes, President and CEO, Divine Capital Markets LLC

Good one for fundamental analysis

This is a good book for fundamental analysis of companies based on 506 parameters.
Mastering the techniques in this book, you would never need a financial or stock market advisor and can create your own investment portfolio which can give you good long term annualized returns.

Overall good book for serious investors.

Excellent!

Can’t wait to attend the work shop! Highly informative and easily understood. There are some numbers and graphs explained which may be easier to see rather than hear but overall great!

Great Book but need the book to see the numbers

If you could sum up Rule #1 in three words, what would they be?

This is by far the best long term investing book I have ever read. I put this method into work and it has paid off. I highly recommend it. I recommend buying the book and buying this audio version only for supplemental purposes. There is a lot of math and numbers that are best seen and documented.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Nope

What about Marc Cashman’s performance did you like?

Very through.

What did you learn from Rule #1 that you would use in your daily life?

How to research great companies.

I love the Rule #1 system and thank you Phil Town!

Gain the power to invest your own money. A well balance book. The narrator did a great job. This is just the foundation of a sound investment strategy that without experience you can climb above the level of any mutual fund advisor.

Chapters are not synched

the book content is great!! the narrator speaks well and easy to understand at 1.5x speed. my only issue is the chapter labels in the audio version are not matched up with the real book. chapter 4 of the audio book contains 4, 5, and 6.
