Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Learn the negotiation model used by Google to train employees worldwide, U.S. Special Ops to promote stability globally (“this stuff saves lives”), and families to forge better relationships.

A 20% discount on an item already on sale. A four-year-old willingly brushes his/her teeth and goes to bed. A vacationing couple gets on a flight that has left the gate. $5 million more for a small business; a billion dollars at a big one.

Based on thirty years of research among forty thousand people in sixty countries, Wharton Business School Professor and Pulitzer Prize winner Stuart Diamond shows in this unique and revolutionary book how emotional intelligence, perceptions, cultural diversity and collaboration produce four times as much value as old-school, conflictive, power, leverage and logic.

As negotiations underlie every human encounter, this immediately-usable advice works in virtually any situation: kids, jobs, travel, shopping, business, politics, relationships, cultures, partners, competitors.

The tools are invisible until you first see them. Then they’re always there to solve your problems and meet your goals.

Great book about negotiation and life

Taught my favorite course in grad school. Twenty years later I still quote what learned from him more than any other course so it was great to revisit all the lessons in this book.

The author shows good thinking.

This is a practical counsel in practical ways to get the good things you want from others. As it goes on, I realized that the author is thinking very well, and is kind to others in a practical way. Towards the end he suggests some new ways of thinking about world terrorism and foreign policy, and I believe his solutions would work if we all listened to his counsel. We have been trying to smash others too long.

Got a lot more outta "Getting More"

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook to anyone. It is practical and ethical. Does NOT employ an us vs. them mentality.

What did you like best about this story?

Encourages us to be honest not manipulative.

What about Marc Cashman’s performance did you like?

Great Speaker. Made the story telling more life like.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Seemed to us a lot of Christian principles without claiming any spirtuality.

Any additional comments?

Every Business person should read this book.

Decent tools to use

Would you consider the audio edition of Getting More to be better than the print version?

Didn't read the print

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Less opinion on how to raise your children, less background of the people who had the interactions. It does not add to the techniques to know the person is an executive or a doctor.

Any additional comments?

I did not like the book in the beginning, it is just a series of interactions. Here is what this guy did, here is what this girl did. Later the situations became more apparently similar to situations I face and the negotiation techniques began to make sense.

It's not a rocket science

But too many people too often forget about being polite, considerate, kind, organized or even grateful. In a down to earth practical manner Mr Diamond reminds the readers/listeners that being civilized pays off handsomely and illustrates it with a ton of colorful real life stories to convince even those who still believe that the client is always right. The book is very practical & inspiring, in spite of bring a little repetitive (to better instill it in the readers mind), it gives one courage and drive to try and ... Get more :))). Thank you Mr Diamond!

The performance of the audiobook is outstanding adding to the ease of comprehension. I will certainly listen to more books.

Necessary knowledge

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

YES, my daughter recommended this to me three times. She hhas never done that before. Now I understand why and have recommended it too.

What did you like best about this story?

These are important ideas, we all need to learn how to negotiate. The ideas are often ones we can use easily, but need to practice.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Getting More?

I already have. I look for opportunities to negotiate where I used to just accept what was offered.

Changed the way I view every human interaction

Would you listen to Getting More again? Why?

Definitely, this is one of those books that I plan on re-listening to at least once a year. The tools discussed in the book are incredibly powerful, and I imagine that a re-read every year is a fairly cheap way to keep them fresh in my mind.

What did you learn from Getting More that you would use in your daily life?

I learned how to use different tactics to understand where someone is coming from and then how to negotiate with them to further both of your goals. Getting more is about *everyone* getting more – not you getting everything.

Any additional comments?

I've already used the techniques from this book with my mom, girlfriend, friends and sales clerks to negotiate everything from where to go for vacation to a free pair of glasses.
