Publisher's summary

A million-copy seller, Henry Hazlitt’s Economics in One Lesson is a classic economic primer. But it is also much more, having become a fundamental influence on modern “libertarian” economics of the type espoused by Ron Paul and others. Called by H. L. Mencken “one of the few economists in history who could really write,” Henry Hazlitt achieved lasting fame for this brilliant but concise work. In it, he explains basic truths about economics and the economic fallacies responsible for unemployment, inflation, high taxes, and recession, as well as illustrating the destructive effects of taxes, rent and price controls, inflation, trade restrictions, and minimum-wage laws.

Economics in One Lesson is deceptively prescient and far-reaching in its efforts to dissemble economic fallacies that are so prevalent they have almost become a new orthodoxy. Many current economic commentators across the political spectrum have credited Hazlitt with foreseeing the collapse of the global economy, which occurred more than fifty years after the initial publication of this seminal work. Hazlitt’s focus on non-governmental solutions, strong—and strongly reasoned—antideficit position, and general emphasis on free markets, economic liberty of individuals, and the dangers of government intervention make Economics in One Lesson every bit as relevant and valuable today as it has been since publication.

Critic reviews

"If there were a Nobel Prize for clear economic thinking, Mr. Hazlitt's book would be a worthy recipient...like a surgeon's scalpel, it cuts through...much nonsense that has been written in recent years about our economic ailments." (J.W. Hanes, former Undersecretary of the Treasury)

Excellent listen.

Wish they would teach this in schools today. Makes you think of consequences of actions and who or what it helps or hurts.

Listen and consider

While I don't believe in his politics, his explanation of economics is undeniable. He wrote this when the US budget deficit was nearing $60B and healthcare was less than 10% of GDP.

encridable book

My idol Mike Rowe suggested that this book would be a great start to understand the economy. Mike Rowe was right, this book was enlightening and very educational. I would highly recommend everyone to read or listen to this book.

Clear, Concise Common Sense

This book is a must read for Conservatives. It counters the arguments of Keynesians by stating that an economic policy must focus on all of the consequences beyond the main recipients.

Everything Everyone Should Already Know about Economics

This book confronts the most flagrant and catastrophic errors that people constantly make when speaking on economics.

In elegant detail, it lays out sound and easily understood cases for the free market and capitalism in virtually every area, and confronts the popular erroneous arguments made by economic leftists. The cases are compelling and decisive on every issue.

This book should be broadcast over the world. It should be required reading in every public high school. It should be air dropped within indestructible loudspeakers over communist countries. It should be hacked into totalitarian propaganda feeds. It should be beamed into Bernie Sanders' head with an ultrasonic projector.

This book can change the world for the better.

Sound Economic Treatise

Henry Hazlitt provided a very valuable service to his fellow man when he wrote this book! The lay reader/listener will come away with an accurate, and almost complete understanding of economics.

I want to also mention that Jeff Riggenbach did an outstanding job reading the text.
