Publisher's summary

Modern culture is obsessed with identity.

Since the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision in 2015, sexual identity has dominated both public discourse and cultural trends — yet no historical phenomenon is its own cause. From Augustine to Marx, various views and perspectives have contributed to the modern understanding of the self.

In this timely audiobook, Carl Trueman analyzes the development of the sexual revolution as a symptom — rather than the cause — of the human search for identity. Trueman surveys the past, brings clarity to the present, and gives guidance for the future as Christians navigate the culture in humanity’s ever-changing quest for identity.

The most important book for our time

If you have ever wondered how our culture and the West, in particular, has got to where we are today, READ THIS BOOK! The topics discussed in here, and how they've evolved over time to this point, are explained in such a thorough manner that I would argue if you pay close enough attention, you'll never again be left scratching your head at what has happened at nearly every level of our society. "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self" is an incredibly enlightening read--a "Triumph" of modern scholarship unmatched by any other "academic" writing in recent history that I've had the pleasure of reading. Inform yourself today and stop living in the dark.

A great overview of the philosophical foundation behind our current (anti) culture

There are many takeaways from this book, including the role of poetry and art in shaping our cultures. His comments on death works are so enlightening.

An important book, scholarly yet accessible

I have followed Carl Trueman for years and found him to be a careful and intelligent scholar and a faithful Christian. In this book he tackles issues of critical importance for our age, explains how we have ended up where we are, and offers thoughts for how we move forward. He uses the sexual revolution as a case study in how changes in the view of the self have affected our culture and how the church needs to understand this to be able to continue to minister in this modern age. Highly recommend.

Great Book, a few Gaps

I found this book very helpful in Understanding the past and development of thought to our current time. however it doesn't address some of the race and CRT things that seem to be related to the LGBT movement as well

A must read to understand our times.

Trueman provides a remarkably insightful journey through several centuries to help us understand why we think the way we do. We do not exist in a vacuum. And today’s culture is more an “anti-culture” than anything else. That is, it rests more upon destroying the hallmarks of the existing culture than building anything sustainable to replace it. A warning. An exhortation. A must read.

Helped me answer my burning question

Why are we in a society today that so fluidly accepts moral flexibility.

This book is a great source for one understanding of how to analyze our moral framework in the 21st century.

Must read for Christians who want to meaningfully engage with culture

At times, it can be very dense here time and reap the benefit of Trumans, insightfulness and analysis. No point is the author, polemic or condescending. He clearly writes from the Christian perspective, but without Miss characterizing the cultural developments that he ultimately critiques
