Publisher's summary

Profane, honest, and totally real advice from comedian and director Kevin Smith - one of America's most original voices....

Take one look at Kevin Smith: He's a balding fatty who wears a size XXL hockey jersey, shorts, and slippers year-round. Not a likely source for life advice. But take a second look at Kevin Smith: He changed filmmaking forever when he was 24 with the release of Clerks, and since then has gone on to make nine more profitable movies, runs his own production company, wrote a best-selling graphic novel, and has a beautiful wife and kids. So he must be doing something right.

As Kevin's millions of Twitter followers and millions of podcast listeners know, he's the first one to admit his flaws and the last one to care about them. In early 2011, he began using his platform to answer big questions from fans - like "What should I do with my life?"- and he discovered that he had a lot to say. Tough Sh-t distills his four decades of breaking all the rules down to direct and brutally honest advice, including:

  • Why he has accepted Ferris Bueller as his personal savior, and what the Tenets of Buellerism can teach about hiding in plain sight and lip-syncing in the face of danger
  • Why it's really fun to eat but not so fun to be fat
  • What to do about people who don't like your policies ( for starters, tell them to pucker up and smooch your big ol' butt)
  • What Kevin's idol Wayne Gretzky can teach us about creativity and direction

For anyone who's out of a job, out of luck, or just out of sugary snack foods, Tough Sh*t is an unabashedly honest guide to getting the most out of doing the least.

Kevin Smith delivers!

Loved this book. Smith reflects on his life choices and how he became successful. This isn't just funny stories, although there's lots of that, it's how to posture yourself for happiness and success. Smiths attitude and way with people have served him his whole life. His story is inspiring and motivating. Props for reading his own book.

Kevin Smith Fan

Okay, if you aren't a Smithite, you might not get this book. But for those of us who love his movies, Smodcasts, and writing in general, this book is great. The pauses in narration of the book to add off the cuff are hilarious. It was nice to hear the author tell his story in his own words. Not the ghost writers some celebs have.

Great listen, great voice

Great book, great story, good voice , cool guy. Had the feeling to run out and buy "Cop Out" midway through the book for some reason. . . I wish I would have purchased sooner

Great listen!

Smith had lead a fascinating life! I enjoy when authors narrate their own book, but Smith deviates from time to time. It's honestly quite refreshing. He's candid, honest, and down to earth. To put it simply, this dude is hilarious and awesome at his craft.

Very entertaining stories! Loved the audio book because it's hilarious hearing Kevin tell his own stories. You also get bonus snippets in between chapters! Very funny!

Will listen many many more times.

Love it completely. If you don't dig Kev Smith, then this really isn't for you. I listen to many of his podcasts so I know the man better than I know myself.

If you're a Kevin Smith fan - you MUST get this!

Any additional comments?

Narrated by the man himself, this book is definitely a must listen for any Kevin Smith fan. And although it's available in text form, the book is best absorbed via Audiobook. The fact that Kevin Smith narrates this alone is enough to hold that opinion. But the way he does it, like he's talking to you in his always funny, passionate and emotional style combined with his little "not in the book" moments gives you the feeling that you are there with him in his living room and he's telling you all these stories personally.

The material itself is, as is usually the case with Kevin Smith, pure gold. I listened to this book in one sitting, and will probably listen to it again sometime. From his early childhood, to his heroes, to a passionate final few chapters about his family, this book is a great way to get to know the man behind (and silently in front of) the camera.

A couple of things you should keep in mind: first, I have been a huge Kevin Smith fan for years. I own and have watched all of his movies numerous times (except maybe Jersey Girl). I have some of his Q&A shows on DVD and watch those once in a while, and I have the Clerks cartoon. I also listen to his SModCast network of podcasts. So read the above review with that in mind. Second, if you are also a fan like me, you'll love this but a lot of material will be stuff you've probably already heard elsewhere in the View Askew/SModCo universe.

Fat Man Talk Good

If you're a dick you may not like this book.
If you are any other version of the human condition then you'll probably enjoy yourself whilst simultaneously enjoying the wordplay of a dedicated and intelligent artist.
Pairs nicely with a box of gas station wine and a gram of the good stuff.
