But the question of who Jesus really was and what his life was like has fascinated generations of Christians. Best selling author and respected journalist Philip Yancey takes a deeper look at the Christ of the Gospels. From the manger in Bethlehem to the cross in Jerusalem, Yancey reveals a complex character, a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who aims to transform your life and faith radically. "Makes you think"

I really like a book that makes me think "outside the box", and the box I most want to think outside of is the notions of religion I grew up with. Don't get me wrong -- I love the church, and it has, actually served me well for the most part. But it took me 30 some years to get past some of the ideas I formed early on about who Jesus was and what he thought. This book was part of that process, and served to sum up what much of what I had come to so far, as well as pushing me past to challenge some of my thinking even further.

While some would like to put him in a box as a very nice man who made people feel good about themselves, or maybe a gentle religious teacher, this is not the man presented by the New Testament. This book goes to the parts that the Sunday School teachers glossed over -- the dangerous words an actions.

If you've never met the real Jesus of the Bible, and you've been chewing for years on the milk-toast image you learned as a child, it is time. Read this book.

    "Good work"

I appreciate this work, for boldly confronting the bland version of Jesus Christ that many churches present. Passionate, unpredictable and full of love - this is the Christ I want to know! My only complaint is, sadly, the narrator's slow delivery, that kind of drags along. Odd, considering the books' content.

"Wonderful Book - Not a good Audio Book"

I read the book which I really enjoyed. But, the audio book has 2 problems:

    1) Very poor sound quality - if you look carefully- the sound quality is available in the lower quality (1) and (2) which sounds like a bad radio a.m. radio broadcast. Instead of the (4) higher sound quality.

    2) The narrator of this book was boring and slow - nothing like some of the C.S. Lewis audio books, which were very enjoyable.

Anyways, I was very disappointed with the quality, I would just rather read the book again. :-(

    R.

    "Poor audio quality"

Phil Yancy is great, this book is great, but the recording was obviously copied from a tape cassette - very poor quality, made worse by the narrator's deep monotone voice. But I found no other recordings available, so this is apparently the only choice for us who choose to listen to books.

"The Jesus I'm beginning to know."
What made the experience of listening to The Jesus I Never Knew the most enjoyable?

Over the years I have enjoyed reading or listening to this book countless times. Mr. Yancey's insights into Jesus' life are fascinating.

What does Bill Richards bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Bill Richards is my faovrite reader. I could listen to him speak hours on end without ever growing weary of his soothing voice.

    Any additional comments?

I recommend this book to anyone wanting a more meaningful answer to Jesus' own question, "Who do you say I am"

    Story
    "Thought provoking"
What did you love best about The Jesus I Never Knew?

It was thought provoking and Biblically based, but made an effort to distance itself from the cookie cutter, US based worldview of a lot of Evangelical authors. Yancey also willingly points out areas where he struggles and times where he erred in his attempt to apply Christ's teaching to his own life. I thought this was profound and intellectually honest.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Jesus I Never Knew?

He mentioned some of the Galilean cultural elements and how the area was perceived by those in the rest of the region. I never knew about the accents and regional prejudices that would have existed against people from there, and what that would have meant for Jesus' ministry.

What does Bill Richards bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He has an excellent voice and he pleasant to listen to. He brings a genuine quality to the material.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, because I wanted to think about what had been presented in each chapter, and I even listened to a couple of chapters twice.

    Any additional comments?

This is a great book without any pat answers or the much overdone "five ways to..." or "10 steps to..." kinds of approaches. I very much look forward to reading more from this author. He is honest, genuine, knowledgeable and very open.

    "boring"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The performance was like a boring college professor. Yuck. Find a better reader who could make the greatest story ever told sound like he is a little bit excited about it.

What could Philip Yancey have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He should have skipped this one.

What didn’t you like about Bill Richards’s performance?

    monotone

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment

    Any additional comments?

    Warning! Don't listen while driving.

"a wonderful human description of Christ"

If you are thinking of buying this and have not listened to the unabridged version I would recommend that you did that first.

The first thing I must say is that the quality of the recording is quite poor, although I got used to it after a while, that said it is completely fascinating, the additional 6 hours are well worth listening to.
