Publisher's summary

Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell returned from his star-crossed mission in Afghanistan with his bones shattered and his heart broken. So many had given their lives to save him-and he would have readily done the same for them. As he recuperated, he wondered why he and others, from America's founding to today, had been willing to sacrifice everything-including themselves-for the sake of family, nation, and freedom.

In Service, we follow Marcus Luttrell to Iraq, where he returns to the battlefield as a member of SEAL Team 5 to help take on the most dangerous city in the world: Ramadi, the capital of war-torn Al Anbar Province. There, in six months of high-intensity urban combat, he would be part of what has been called the greatest victory in the history of U.S. Special Operations forces. We also return to Afghanistan and Operation Redwing, where Luttrell offers powerful new details about his miraculous rescue. Throughout, he reflects on what it really means to take on a higher calling, about the men he's seen lose their lives for their country, and the legacy of those who came and bled before.

A thrilling war story, Service is also a profoundly moving tribute to the warrior brotherhood, to the belief that nobody goes it alone, and no one will be left behind.

I would recommend this book over and over again. It is a great book. I have the other book by Marcus Luttrell and that was also a great read. Anyone who has ever served this country or ever been in combat would appreciate this book. A TRULY GREAT BOOK.

Service is Outstanding!!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Marcus Luttrell is one hell of a man. The book had me in tears one minute then my heart was swelling with pride the next. Mr Luttrells story is of the teams. Everyone should read/listen to Service. If it doesn't move you, you'd better check your pulse. Bravo Zulu Marcus!!!!

Its not Lone Survivor, but still good

If you could sum up Service in three words, what would they be?

Pride, country, and unselfishness

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the depth of explanation from the author. I also like how he adds a lot of personal thoughts at the end. I enjoy seeing the personal side of the "quiet professional".

Have you listened to any of Kevin T. Collins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

NO

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No

Any additional comments?

This book does not have the constant action like Lone Survivor, but it is definitely still
worth the read. I enjoyed it.

Proud to be an American

These guys make me proud to be of an American and also guilty for all they've done for me and my family, and what little I have done for them in return. God bless all of the men and women that are or have served and their families. They are made of the stuff that make the USA the greatest country in the world.

An emotional journey!

What made the experience of listening to Service the most enjoyable?

As veteran I was able to visualize many of the things being described. It was like an emotional roller coaster ride with Marcus.

What other book might you compare Service to and why?

It simply is a way of completing Marcus Luttrell's journey in Lone Survivor.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

As I listened to the book I was all over the place. I felt many moments of pride and honor being a vet. Then many times I felt like I just never did enough to call my self a veteran compared to the individuals in the book. I felt anger and hatred, and even tears as I remember learning of the deaths told in the story. In particular Extortion 17 which I was listening to on the anniversary (a very haunting feeling).

Any additional comments?

I actually gained a better understanding of many things about this war and the dynamics and challenges our service members face. A million Thank You's is never enough!!!

absolute must listen.

if you know the story of America Sniper and Lone Survivor already, this book if an absolute must listen. if you have not heard other stories about the battle of Ramadi, I highly recommend listening to them first.

Books I recommend listening to first to get the most out of this book:
- Line Survivor
- American Sniper
and if you have time,
- Extreme Ownership
- The Dichotomy of Leadership

Only complaint- Kevin Collins talks so slow and drawn out that it is difficult to listen too.
****BUT****, if you up the play speed to x1.20, it solves that problem perfectly!!

Service indeed.

What did you love best about Service?

Thanks to Marcus for getting this out there. It would be helpful to have someone other than Keven T. Collins narrate in my opinion. I found his southern accent to be forced and sometimes it took me out of the story thinking about it instead of being totally captivated. But hey, I don't have the time to read it myself so I can't complain too much.

Did Kevin T. Collins do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

No.
