As a young schoolboy, David Essex dreamed of becoming a professional footballer and was signed up by his beloved West Ham United. But as a teenager, he developed a passion for music, which set him on a very different path, and ultimately led to superstardom. It wasn't, however, an easy start. Scraping a living on the edges of show business was a hard slog, and he endured many disappointments.
Then, aged 23, he went along to an audition for a new musical called Godspell and won the role (Jesus) that shot him to fame. Within a year he was starring in a smash hit film, That'll Be the Day, and had written and recorded his first number-one single, 'Rock On'. It was the start of Essex Mania, and a long journey of undreamt of adventure.
From Godspell to EastEnders, it's been an amazing life. And here is David's full incredible story - in his own words.

"Brilliant Until the Last 2 Chapters"
What a great, GREAT biography until the end. David , like me you came up the hard way, WestHam through and through. Why, OH , why spend so much time of a great read talking about "East Enders". !!!??
at the end ?? You could have easily continued to give a review on' Coronation Street, Home and Away, Neighbours etc.......etc
Brilliant start........poor finish
Really enjoyed this book, David Essex has an easy to listen to reading voice which conveys the ups and downs in his life in a conversational and informative manner. It is well written and I would recommend it to his many fans who have followed his varied carreer throughout the years.
"What a dream"
If your a big fan of David Essex what more could you want, his life story, told in his own voice, I'm listening to him as I write this, he is taking me back to the lovable lad that I fell for many years ago. If your a fan you will not be disappointed. This is my first audible book but when I found out it is his voice I had to buy it. If I could I'd have rated it a hundred + stars, but 5 stars will have to do.
"Rock On David"
Loved it, so much more to this man than I knew before. It was great that he narrated it himself as well. Rock on David x
"nicely read book"
It was lovely to hear the writer read his life story. Having been a huge fan for years felt life it was more a conversation.
The author it was a biography
The whole book mostly his childhood as it was reflective of my own
When his dad died you felt the pain through the reading
David has a lovely reading time very calming and relaxing. Very enjoyable book
"An amazing and very interesting read"
Interesting engaging true
I would compare it with What's it all about by Michael Caine because both authors are lovely big hearted nice people
Just nothing to compare to David Essex narrating the book. His expression when he is reading the book is what makes you want to listen further. A real story told by a real person is just amazing
I think the summing up of his life towards the end of the book. He ended it realy well respecting the reader
It must be a difficult thing going over your life, the good and bad, it is nice to get to know and read about other peoples lives as it teaches you things and may help you in your own life, also nice to read about celebs life because they are extra ordinary people and do have a special talent to of been able to rise to the top as they have
Loved him in the 70s, love him now. I'm so glad he chose to read this himself! His voice telling his story is so warm and familiar (not to mention sexy!). A must for all David Essex fans.
