Publisher's summary

When his picture appeared on the cover of Texas Monthly, Joaquin Jackson became the icon of the modern Texas Rangers. Nick Nolte modeled his character on him in the movie Extreme Prejudice. Jackson even had a speaking part of his own in The Good Old Boys with Tommy Lee Jones. But the role that Jackson has always played the best is that of the man who wears the silver badge cut from a Mexican cinco peso coin, a working Texas Ranger.

Legend says that one Ranger is all it takes to put down lawlessness and restore the peace: one riot, one Ranger. In this adventure-filled memoir, Joaquin Jackson recalls what it was like to be the Ranger who responded when riots threatened, violence erupted, and criminals needed to be brought to justice across a wide swath of the Texas-Mexico border from 1966 to 1993.

Critic reviews

"Joaquin Jackson's frank and colorful account of his long career as a modern-day Texas Ranger thrills like an action novel....I could hardly put the book down....The writing is superb." (Elmer Kelton, award-winning author of The Good Old Boys)

God Bless Texas

Being a life long Texas, I could relate to many of the sentiments in this book. My grandfather watched Ranger Lone Wolf Gonzales arrest miscreants, put them on a chain “trot line” and select an axe handle to break up a whiskey still.

The material is genuine. Narrator is great!

The author tells his life story as best he can. You get to know him and his time as a Ranger in a very personal way, like hearing stories on the porch at sunset. Couldn't have picked a better narrator.

Texas - one view through one window

Hard earned respect. I would to tell the author “thanks” for protecting a kid in his area. Couple of the pronunciations were like nails on a chalkboard- or maybe I have just misheard them. Makes me even prouder to be a Texan

God bless Texas

The story of a modern day American hero.
H. Joaquin Jackson was a Texas Ranger and I wish I had known him.
The book is a great read, can’t wait to get hold of the second/last one he wrote.
I nearly grew up in Texas, I wish my parents had made the move.
If you like old western movies, country music,
and law and order you’ll enjoy the adventure.

excellent

I really enjoyed this. Narration is great. I recommend it. I found the movie The Good Old Boys on Amazon prime. I'm gonna try to point him out when he puts the coin on the bar.

Entertaining

Excellent book. As others mentioned, the narrator does mispronounce Texas words, but if you aren’t from Texas, you won’t know it.
