Editorial reviews

In this captivating work, Richard Stanley Cagan exposes the saga of New York City narcotics detective Michael Palermo and his ties to the world of organized crime. Kevin Stillwell gives a tremendous performance, intoning with a grit and vigor that serves to enhance these scenes of NYPD corruption and the intrigue of underground crime families. He is especially adept at portraying the various characters that appear throughout, making each one distinct and memorable. Like classic New York film noir such as The French Connection, Mafia Cop places the listener in the middle of all the heart-stopping action.

Publisher's summary

Detective Michael Palermo built his career on his unique ability to inhabit two worlds at once: the world of law enforcement and the underworld of New York’s crime family organizations. Palermo participated in over 2,000 arrests while maintaining close relationships with the kingpins of organized crime - ties that allowed him to stay one step ahead of the rest of the New York City Police Department.

This true crime drama takes you inside the police force at its most corrupt and into the dark and dirty world of dons, consiglieres, underbosses, button men, soldiers, and cowboys.

Good story, great narrator.

Definitely kept my attention. The narrator is so good and consistent, that it's actually like listening to various characters interacting. Good story too.

Just keep going.

This was a painful book to get through. The first intro about the work with the Stones is pointless for the rest of the book. Most of it sounds like a bad movie, and the fact that he changed names of well known mobsters is pointless and frustrating ...made it difficult to keep track of the story in time. Props to the narrator. He did a great job with trying to make the individuals standout, although some of the accents were a bit cliche, but it’s difficult working with mediocre material. In my opinion, these stories are largely false or inflated to make the subject look good, or they are true and he’s dirty. I don’t believe for a second he did all that and didn’t take bribes or kickbacks. For its length, pass on to something more interesting. If you care about the mafia, I recommend Five Families by Selwyn Rabb for a great history.

Worth your time, indeed

This true crime story is captivating from the start. It's an eye-opening rendering of the way it really was back in the 1960's in the
Bronx, NY. Sometimes doing good, gets you good.

Made up names, not accurate

Don't order of your looking for a true and accurate story. Somewhat entertaining but not being 100% real ruined it

Bringing Mob and Police reality to life!

Amazing pace and entertaining architecture which imbeds the listener into the trenches with this amazing man and his journey floating and navigating between good and evil, and pushing for the best possible outcomes of one complex mess of crime and controlled corruption after another. One is left wondering if he is too compromised in his personal ethics, or if he simply did his best to solve for each situation using the tools and methods humanly possible.

Decent book, worth a listen.

A bit hard to follow at the beginning but decent enough. I’m a history buff and this ain’t in that realm but it was a good listen.

Not for a casual listener

The book ended strong but was a slow uphill ride. Very well read. Stillwell did a magnificent job.

Complete fiction

It reads like a bad mob movie and this book is fiction and should be listed as such. Narrator is very good however
