Publisher's summary

Actor, producer, and New York Times best-selling author Rob Lowe offers up a collection of personal stories in an honest and celebratory memoir about men and women, art and commerce, fathers and sons, addiction and recovery, and sex and love.

Actor Rob Lowe is an entertaining raconteur whose best-selling first audiobook, Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography, was hailed as "self-deprecatingly funny" (The New York Times) and "thoroughly entertaining" (Time) and earned the author the cover of Vanity Fair.

Love Life serves up another delicious selection of intimate stories and observations from Lowe's life, told with humor, warmth, and brutal honesty. After writing his acclaimed debut effort, Lowe felt he had more stories to share and many more friends to introduce. The result is a touching memoir about the business and craft of acting, the pitfalls of success, family, love, and much more.

Among the many adventures Lowe describes in Love Life are what it's like in the trenches as both the star and producer of a flop TV show; how a visit, as a 20-year-old, to Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion led to a surprise in the hot tub; how an actor prepares for a role, as well as the practical, boots-on-the-ground details no drama or film school would ever teach you. You'll delight at the hilarious account of the time a major movie star stole his girlfriend, and of coaching a kid's basketball team dominated by omnipresent helicopter parents. The story of coming to terms with his son's departure to college for the education his father never got will touch anyone with a family.

Building on Stories I Only Tell My Friends, Love Life is the literary equivalent of returning to a favorite restaurant to savor a completely different, delicious new dish. If you love life, you'll love this audiobook.

He did it again

Not quite as good as the first but it is a wonderful combination of great storytelling and performance.

What a refreshing happy story

I can't help but love Rob Lowe even more after reading this book filled with stories of life, love, family, kids, frolic, and fun. A delightful "listen" in Rob's voice. I think he would be very pleased to hear me say that my overwhelming impression is that he is a "fine man". Well done Rob.

Love Life

After previously listening to Stories I Only Tell My Friends, I chose to listen to Love Life. I was concerned it would not meet the expectation I had given how much I enjoyed the first reading. I was not disappointed. Some of the story does overlap with the first book but it only gives a stronger connection to his story and I appreciate that. His telling of his life felt open and honest. And, the last 5 minutes validated how I choose to see life and made me appreciate Rob Lowe even more.

Different from his first book, but entertaining

This book had a different tone and skipped around through the various events in his life, but I still found it moving and an entertaining listen.

Rob Lowe Should Narrate All Stories

Would you listen to Love Life again? Why?

Rob Lowe is a great storyteller with great stories. It's just that simple.

What did you like best about this story?

Celebrities life a different kind of life than the rest of us but Rob Lowe seems like a pretty decent and regular person who lives an extraordinary life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

My favorite laugh-out-loud moment was the Tom Sizemore story. And my favorite "a-ha" moment was when he describes what a day in the life of a working actor is like. Totally unglamorous.

Any additional comments?

Wonderful narration. I felt like I was listening to a very interesting friend tell me stories and I wanted to hear more. I hope he writes another book.

Like sitting round talking to a friend

I thoroughly enjoyed both of his books. It is like sitting around with a buddy and listening to some interesting stories. I hope he continues to write.

Read this book first...then his first book.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The book, standing alone, is a solid read...err, listen. However, stacked up against Mr. Lowe's first work of art, it fails to live up to the high standard he set.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting story, relates to his time and events with Bernie Brillstein. The least interesting story, much to my chagrin, was that of the 'Mansion.'

Have you listened to any of Rob Lowe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the problem with this book. Although it is probably not fair to judge this book against another, I think it's appropriate given they are virtually the same concepts by the same person. Rob Lowe hit a home run with his first book, 'Stories I Only Tell my Friends,' which set the bar extremely high for his sophomore approach.

Do you think Love Life needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes. I feel like Rob Lowe has many more stories to tell and another book is fitting. I will concede that I can see it being several years from now before he is able to write a juicy enough book that can compare with his first effort. I would image he has many more stories to tell about his time on Californication, Parks and Rec, and Brother and Sisters, but the content is too fresh to speak candidly about. I do look forward to the time when it's appropriate to hear those stories.

Any additional comments?

Again, this book is not bad. However, I would recommend it first when listening to Rob Lowe. Although book one, 'Stories I Only Tell my Friends,' delves into his early life, childhood, and break into show business, and seems like the natural place to start, for my money you will find more satisfaction in listening to this book first and then taking on his first book second. The reality is, his first book is so good I am not sure any book would be able to cross the high bar he already set. In the end I would still highly recommend this book.

Who knew Rob Lowe was this good of a story teller

I drive everyday and so I am always looking for a good listen. I have now listened to both of Robs books. Both are excellent! Not just another, "Hollywood actor tell all". They have real substance and it is very well written and delivered. Rob does a great job with the narration as well. Can't wait for the third one, if you have another one in you, Mr. Lowe....?

The Talented Mr. Lowe

Another great book. I was fortunate to have listened to his two books back-to-back so I had ideal continuity. More importantly the stories were just as engrossing as the first book. A perfect mix of stories that could happen to anyone (getting kicked in the jewels by your son during an over zealous prank) and ones that could only happen to a celebrity (the mansion). I especially enjoyed when he would described the setting under which he was writing, I could visualize him writing and made him feel like a friend. The music his son composed and played for the book was a perfect compliment. Another job well done, Rob Lowe!
