Publisher's summary

Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to have a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive.

This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history. His squadmates fought valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive, blasted by an RPG into a place where his pursuers could not find him. Over the next four days, terribly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell crawled for miles through the mountains and was taken in by sympathetic villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors.

A born and raised Texan, Marcus Luttrell takes us from the rigors of SEAL training, where he and his fellow SEALs discovered what it took to join the most elite of the American special forces, to a fight in the desolate hills of Afghanistan for which they never could have been prepared. His account of his squadmates' heroism and mutual support renders an experience for which two of his squadmates were posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism that is both heartrending and life-affirming. In this rich chronicle of courage and sacrifice, honor and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers a powerful narrative of modern war.

must read

Loved this book, as a former soldier, I feel his description of actions are right on. I was in no way a seal, but met a few while I was in Afghanistan...I left in April 2005, but my husband was still in Kandahar until October 2005, he would told me that things got "HOT" shortly after we left. also how he describes George W bush and his father...I never have met either but just listening to them speak would make you feel proud to serve your country

Amazing

This should be a must read for every member of Congress. But for the ROEs, those brave Seals would still be alive.

Almost Too Incredible

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, the story in and of itself is one of the most incredible stories of perseverance.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lone Survivor?

Quite simply, the string of luck he has to make it out alive.

What didn’t you like about Kevin Collins’s performance?

Many people dislike Kevin Collins' readings because he is very dramatic. While it is true it is a bit overwhelming at first, the story is worth the listen… Plus, you get used to it rather quickly. The people vilifying the book simply for Kevin's reading are being overly dramatic.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, it absolutely has it's moments in which you tear up. It also has moments that are too incredible to be perceived as true at first glance.

Any additional comments?

I've read or listened to a vast array of military nonfiction. From World War II and Vietnam, to the Cold War and contemporary writings, I've got a decent amount of experience with the genre. This is, without question, the most incredible true story I've ever read… With all due respect to 'Unbroken.' If you listen to one story, one military nonfiction, one SEAL book, I hope it is this one.

Great story with excellent narration

Would you listen to Lone Survivor again? Why?

Yes, it is very compelling and inspiring.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Obviously Marcus Luttrell. I commend him for the way he honored his fallen comrades.

Have you listened to any of Kevin Collins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He was excellent in his performance! He really brought this production to life and his ability to convey emotion was outstanding.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This book will inspire you and make you proud of our young people who dedicate themselves to military service.

Any additional comments?

I almost didn't buy this book because of the negative reviews of the reader's performance. I took a chance and got it anyway and that was such a good decision. I've been an audible customer for many years and have listened to thousands of books. I can say with all sincerity that Kevin Collins gave one of the finest performances I've ever heard. He made you feel like you were there and he brought all of the images and emotions to life with his performance. Absolutely outstanding!

Luttrell and Robinson did an excellent job of portraying the selection and expectations of our military elite.
