Publisher's summary

Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to have a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive.

This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history. His squadmates fought valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive, blasted by an RPG into a place where his pursuers could not find him. Over the next four days, terribly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell crawled for miles through the mountains and was taken in by sympathetic villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors.

A born and raised Texan, Marcus Luttrell takes us from the rigors of SEAL training, where he and his fellow SEALs discovered what it took to join the most elite of the American special forces, to a fight in the desolate hills of Afghanistan for which they never could have been prepared. His account of his squadmates' heroism and mutual support renders an experience for which two of his squadmates were posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism that is both heartrending and life-affirming. In this rich chronicle of courage and sacrifice, honor and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers a powerful narrative of modern war.

Really enjoyed it. The narrator was not as bad as many make him out to be. I was completely engaged the entire time.

Worth your time

As a lefty, the blame that the author points towards liberals is irritating. Believing the media to be messed up because of its' liberal bias, rather than the lazy, or profit driven bias, is an all to common problem. I also find it hard to believe that the way the wars were executed under Bush 43, Cheney, and Rumsfeld, were overly (if any) influenced by liberals.

That being said, Marcus and his comrades paid in blood partly because of rules of engagement. His family also paid a price for the sloppiness of the media. He has a right to his belief's and I suspect that they are maturing after the release of the book and film. The irritating bits stand out, but are a very small part of the book.

The book seems to be in his voice. Marcus telling you of his service and the heroism of his team mates. It has the feel of a very heart felt story told to you during a weekend of barbecues and beer.

We learn a bit of Mr. Lattrell's history. He tells of the process of becoming a SEAL. He does a spectacular job in his quest to relate the battle that the book centers on. He also conveys great heart, respect, warmth, and emotion when he talks about his team mates, what was done for him by others, and pretty much everyone that was worthy of such consideration.

I really do recommend the book. Left/right rancor needs to stop preventing us from seeing value in others view points. His is a well told and important tale.

Better than the movie

I’ve seen the movie multiple times and this was way better. The description of what actually went on was way more detailed. I wish the movie has stuck with the actual story instead of altering what really happened. Extremely sad even though I knew what was coming. These were/are some hard dudes. #tagsgiving #sweepstakes #lonesurvivor #Afghanistan #seal

A powerful, true story

I highly recommend this on audible. This story is such an exciting and action packed listen that it could have been written as a fictional thriller novel. The fact that the story really happened makes it even more powerful and moving. The loss of Marcus' fellow soldiers is so emotional. You can feel that he will never forget the bond they shared. The fact of his survival (only possible by the kindness of strangers) is almost a miracle. The tradition of the importance of inviting a stranger into the village shows a strong compassion for human life. Thank you to the villagers who took Marcus in and protected him. Thanks to Marcus Luttrell and the other Seals in this story for their service and their sacrifice. God bless you all and God bless America!

Unapologetic, God-fearing, American patriotism

Wow. I have no words to describe how amazing and awful this story was to listen to. Amazing because of the usually untold heroics of these silent warriors. Awful in the fact that they went through that experience. The book has very few, if any dull points. The story is well played out. The narrator, Kevin Collins, does an amazing job. So much so, I'm looking at other books he's narrated just to hear his excellent ability to tell stories.I could almost feel myself in some of the moments with U.S. Navy Seal Luttrell. I often felt deeply emotional about what he and his U.S. Navy Seal buddies went through. And I applaud the fact that he wants the world to know, not so much about him, but the ultimate sacrifice made by his colleagues, in the name of freedom. I also valued the unfiltered, unapologetic, God-fearing, pro-American manner in which the story is told. I appreciate Marcus Luttrell's love for God and country, especially in an increasingly PC-sensitive, American-hating world we're seeing more and more each day. God bless you Marcus and all your buddies who made the ultimate sacrifice.

God bless our men and men of the armed forces.

This was incredible I can not pin point any specific part that was any more outstanding than any other. It will bring you from laughing out loud to tears streaming down your face and back again. Marcus Luttrell is an amazing American and we are blessed as a nation for his service along with that of his brothers in arms. May he and his be blessed with peace in their hearts and when that time comes to be met by our savior Jesus Christ with out reached arms.
