Publisher's summary

Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to have a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive.

This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history. His squadmates fought valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive, blasted by an RPG into a place where his pursuers could not find him. Over the next four days, terribly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell crawled for miles through the mountains and was taken in by sympathetic villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors.

A born and raised Texan, Marcus Luttrell takes us from the rigors of SEAL training, where he and his fellow SEALs discovered what it took to join the most elite of the American special forces, to a fight in the desolate hills of Afghanistan for which they never could have been prepared. His account of his squadmates' heroism and mutual support renders an experience for which two of his squadmates were posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism that is both heartrending and life-affirming. In this rich chronicle of courage and sacrifice, honor and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers a powerful narrative of modern war.

Good read

Good book, but a little too much (extras)... would be better if a 1/3 was cut.
I'd also say the toughest guys I know, don't have to swear such foul language to show how tough they are. That Pashtun was tough without saying anything. Tough guys need no show or talk

This is a magnificent story

I really enjoyed the way this was written. I couldn’t stop listening. I felt the heart of Mr. Luttrell. I felt it from beginning to end.

Great story. Reads like somewhat implausible fiction. I couldn't avoid the feeling that it included significant exaggeration.

Impossible to put down. Will keep you on the edge of your seat. I read a lot of military memoirs, and this one, far more than others, left me with the feeling that some of the facts (maybe a lot of them) were exaggerations. But the hallmarks are there. Then again, maybe they're not.

Much Better Than The Movie

The real story is fascinating. The narrators voice was quite cheesy but after about 20 chapters you kind of get used to it.

Riveting

The narrator's fake Texas accent (trying to channel Marcus Luttrell's Texas roots) is distracting at first, but if you can get through the first hour or so, you either get used to it or he tones it down some). It's worth the effort because this story is absolutely spellbinding!

A tribute to three phenomenal men, and the unbelievable story of the survivor who lived to tell it. Performed perfectly.

Great listening / highly recommended

This first hand account is genuinely riveting . I listen to audible books , mostly history and biographical while hiking trails and found myself going many more miles so I could continue with the story. I had just finished Fighter Pilot ( WWll - Viet Nam memoir of ace pilot Robin Olds ) and Ghengis Khan ( 1200AD Mongols vs the world ), and couldn't help but relate about how wars are fought to either win ( or not ) . If you like history and want to have a taste of Navy Seal training , don't miss this one !
