Publisher's summary

In June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in Afghanistan for the Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader. Less then 24 hours later, only one of those SEALs remained alive.

This is the story of team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing and the desperate battle that led to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. More than anything, this is the story of how his teammates stood beside him until he was the last one left - blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and breathing.

Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe that risked everything to protect him from the Taliban.

In this moving chronicle of courage, Marcus Luttrell offers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare.

Every proud individual should listen this

Completely immersed in the brave experience of Mr. Marcus Lutrell. We always feel how we are suffering and always bullshit ourselves with trivial pursuits. This story of American Brave Hearts will finally make us understand what real purpose of life should be. Salute to all the martyrs and The Lone Survivor.

One man's guilt trip worth reading

I'm not generally a fan of military stories, but this is a story worth hearing! An amazing true tale - not so much of a hero - as a man faced with terrible odds and guilt at the loss of his comrades, who manages to survive the worst of luck and live to tell the tale.

He's a bit over-the-top military in his descriptions and attitudes - but of course, that is exactly, authentically who he is - and what makes the tale so engaging right to the end.

Engaging

This is a terrific "read". I was completely engaged even though I knew the outcome. You will want to listen to this before it becomes a movie. If you liked "Black Hawk Down" you will like this book.

Must listen

Highly recommend. We had 2 boys (16 years old) in the backseat who thought they wanted no part of an audio book. After 45 minutes they were begging us to not turn it off.
We all learned so much about Afghanistan. I've read many books on Afghanistan - this offered a new perspective.

The Real War

This is the author's first book and he gets your attention from the beginning. There are several parts/phases which appear to be written by a novice, but the story is terrific. He and his fellow soldiers deserve all the honor this country can provide....no matter what your opinion on this war may be. What he and the others went through should not go un-noticed. His appearance on TV when the book was released worked. I wanted to read more.

We live our lives in comfort and complain of stress while waiting in traffic. These soldiers would switch with us in a heart beat.

Great story of courageousness, honor, and what the next generation can provide. Certainly not what you see at rallies.

Awesome read

Wow, what can I say about this book to make you run out and read it? Marcus is in every sense of the word an "American Patriot" at it's best. The bravery, the loss, the pain, the fear, the courage and appendages as big as bowling balls of Marcus Luttrell make this book a don't put down until you finish it kind of book.

For those who have strong opinions about President Bush, the media or killing, you probably won't like this book, but read it anyway. With that said I am one of those bleeping liberals Marcus speaks so highly of (wink). It simply did not stop or deter me from reading on or take away from the punch of this book. I absolutely support our armed forces and all that they stand for. So even though I support my political party I am also bright enough to see both sides of an issue and respect every persons opinion as just that an opinion, we all have em. Marcus and all men and women like him put their lives on the line for "us' the people of the United States of America; Democrats, Republicans and Independents everyday and I for one appreciate them.

No matter what your feelings about the war are, Marcus' words will make your heart swell with American pride, your belly ache for what he went through and make your eyes brim (if not full out cry like I did)with tears for the pain he endured physically and the pain of heartbreak for the men he loved like brothers.

Marcus manages to slip in his sense of humor which helped the ache in my belly on more than one occasion.

I have children; I can only imagine what his parents and brother were going through.

It seems so inadequate but Thank You Marcus I as one of the "People of the United States" will hold you and all the men and women who serve, past, present and future, and those who have lost their lives in service to our great country in my prayers today and always.
