Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Humor, 2014

From the unique perspective of David Sedaris comes a new collection of essays taking his listeners on a bizarre and stimulating world tour. From the perils of French dentistry to the eating habits of the Australian kookaburra, from the squat-style toilets of Beijing to the particular wilderness of a North Carolina Costco, we learn about the absurdity and delight of a curious traveler's experiences. Whether railing against the habits of litterers in the English countryside or marveling over a disembodied human arm in a taxidermist's shop, Sedaris takes us on side-splitting adventures that are not to be forgotten.

Great Satire

Sedaris invites you to live vicariously through stories of his fascinating life. A word of caution: don't attend too closely or you will catch insightful commentary on the nature of humans. David is sneaky like that.

Sedaris is still on top of this game.

Understated hilarity. Sedaris is absolutely this generations's best storyteller. As I writer, he's at the top of my "inspiration" list.

One of Sedaris' finest!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This audiobook kept both myself and my husband engaged throughout. He came home while it was already on and got interested in it, which says a lot for the book because he's generally a "hater".

What other book might you compare Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls to and why?

Some of Sedaris' other books

What about David Sedaris’s performance did you like?

He made me feel like I was there when the story happened.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No.

Not at same level as other books

Any additional comments?

Unfortunately this book was quite lackluster when comparing to his other released material. I must agree with some of the other reviews which state that you might be better off purchasing some of his earlier material.

Love his off-beat humor

Funny stuff, good stories. Could do without the last few pieces that he wrote for the teens to memorize, but otherwise great stuff!

Not quite sure what to make of it.

I bought this book on a whim. I'm not at all familiar with the author, but the title caught my eye. Before I bought the book I read the review and I also read the reviews of the other books that the author has written. So I took a chance, I bought the audio book. As a first time listener to this author I really wasn't sure what to make of it. Reading reviews, I expected to laugh out loud and have a grand old time with each essay. Now, I would be lying if I said that I didn't get a few chuckles. I especially enjoyed the bit about the dentist's office, and also the bit about the colonoscopy. Other than that, each story was just one mundane glimpse into the author's life after another. Maybe I didn't pick the right book to start with with this author, I don't know. I'm willing to give it another chance with another book but just not at this time. I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about with this author. Honestly the book was not all that interesting and most of his stories seem to be fairly pointless and not very exciting. Again I'll try to be fair and give the book 3 stars. Maybe he has some better works but as for this particular book, I don't know that I would really recommend it to anybody.

Mostly awesome

Do not make the mistake of not listening to the ENTIRE audio recording because there's an Easter egg at the very end.

Most of these stories are hilarious and autobiographical, with the typical David Sedaris style. The sea turtle story was heartbreaking. The stories at the end are not autobiographical, but they're still great, even if more facetious than funny.

LOVED that David read the book himself, though I would have preferred the entire recording to have been in a studio rather than some chapters having been read in studio and others having been recorded at live events.

Overall, made me laugh out loud multiple times.

great book

My first audio book and I have read most of David Sedaris's books. I lost this one and chose to do audio so it was even better to hear David read his own words. He has always been oddly observant, deep and petty and 100% real. This includes thoughts on himself and others and it's a rare gem

Loved!

I love David Sedaris. I often hear audiobooks when I'm walking outside and I wonder what people think of me when they notice I'm laughing out loud but NOT on a conversation.
