Publisher's Summary

Best known to the world as the actor who created the legendary Mr. Spock in the cult television series that launched the Star Trek phenomenon, Leonard Nimoy has written the definitive Star Trek memoir. In this long-awaited autobiography, Nimoy opens up to his fans in ways the Vulcan never could.

Having played the pivotal role of Mr. Spock in the original series, in six motion pictures, and in a special two-part episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as having directed two of the movies, Nimoy is well suited to tell the true story behind what was seen by the public. He provides an intelligent and insightful book about the creative process and the actor's craft - and gives his own unique insider's view of the creation of both the character, Mr. Spock, and the Star Trek phenomenon.

    "Excellent."
Where does I Am Spock rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's my favourite of all time.

What was one of the most memorable moments of I Am Spock?

Truthfully, most of the book is memorable. Obviously as a Star Trek fan, all the dealings and goings-on behind the production of the original series were particularly interesting.

Which character – as performed by Leonard Nimoy – was your favorite?

    Spock?

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I wouldn't say I have extreme reactions to books in the first place, no. But I have listened to this book literally tens of times. There's a lot more to Nimoy than Spock and Star Trek.

    Any additional comments?

The focus of this book is Nimoy's experience developing and portraying his famous Spock character. He recites some childhood experiences, but doesn't go into so much detail that it might become dull and long-winded (George Takei, take heed). The focus is on Star Trek and his creative efforts in general. The writing is good, and Nimoy's performance is really enjoyable to me. I like his voice, and I like the way he sounds like he's telling stories and not just reading a script.

"In honor of Spock & Nimoy, lend them an ear."

Was a fun listen, always comforting to hear Nimoys voice and his almost delusional rants with Spock.
focuses mainly on his Star Trek feelings and work and little of his general biography. Good for ST fans and Nimoy/Spock admirers.

    "Two in One"

I am Spock is a brilliant and engaging look at Leonard Nimoys film career. This book gives the reader a behind the scenes look into the original Star Trek series and how it developed. Written with humor and reflective musings, Nimoy delivers a great story of how he and the character he plays, Spock, became one. Read by the author himself, the intermittent dialogue sessions between Spock and Nimoy are hilarious and thought provoking. A must read for any serious Trekkie fan.

"Very good - but not outstanding."

I enjoyed this audiobook - but not quite as much as I expected to. I appreciated some of the explanations surrounding the creation of the best episodes and movies based on the original Star Trek series, especially when Nimoy's involvement was particularly heart-felt. I was less enamored of the numerous times Nimoy defended his role (or lack thereof) in the difficulties that occurred on and off the set. (I suspect the other parties involved would have different perspectives on what happened...) And I would have liked more information about Nimoy himself - his life, his family, etc. (Though, in fairness, that may not have been the intent of this book.)

I enjoy Leonard Nimoy's voice and found his reading of the text to flow so smoothly as to feel as though he were sitting in a comfortable armchair explaining his take on the Star Trek phenomenon, and not reading a script at all. (There is one exception near the beginning, when several sentences are all but repeated for no apparent reason - perhaps an editing error?) All in all, I enjoyed this audiobook and would recommend it to others. It gets 4 stars instead of 5 as the book itself is not of the caliber that I would be likely to listen a second time.

"Very Interesting to Meet Mr Spock & Mr Nimoy"

I enjoyed this look into Leonard Nimoy's life and how Mr. Spock affected him--and still does.

I don't think that I can ever watch Star Trek episodes without hearing Nimoy's voice about what was actually happening at the time.

Most of the autobiographies written by actors are boring but this one wasn't. I truly enjoyed listening and recommend it to others. Especially Mr. Spock fans.

What did you love best about I Am Spock?

A great read(listen) and gave me a behind the scenes look into what the original Star Trek series was all about and what was happening during those early years from Leonard's perspective. My first audio book about Star Trek. Leonard Nimoy comes across as very sincere and has a great deal of respect and passion when to refering to everyone involved in the conception, development and making of the series and the Star Trek movies that followed. Heck, I haven't even finshed listening to it and I love it! Guess I am a Trekkie! Who would have thought.... :) 5 stars all around!

    "More than just Spock"

I am so glad I ordered and listened to this wonderful book. I am very pleased that it was narrated by Leonard Nimoy. I love the insite wonderfully worded way he presented the background to a most beloved series and character. Yes, I am an avid Trekkie/Trekker. I wholeheartedly agree with his critique of the the series and especially of the 6 movies. I own every one of all of the TV series iterations. I at one time owned all of the 6 follow up movies. However, I only have kept II/IV/ & VI as I did not enjoy the rest of them enough to ever watch them again. IV and VI are my favorites of those three. Nimoys analogy of the how/why/etc. of the other ones validate to me why I chose not to keep the others in my library.

I especially like the way he interjected conversations between Spock and himself. I am sure I will listen to this again from time to time. I was completely surprised that when I read the narration of the death scene of Spock, that I was in tears reliving the scene in my head. And then, I was smiling when listening to the scenario from VI about the innocent lady with Chekov in San Francisco. What a delightful bit of trivia that I will enjoy each time I watch it again and again.

"A great history of an American Icon"

I grew up watching Star Trek and I never knew the backstory behind Spock or any other character. All I knew was that Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner hated each other or that is what people said. The truth is that neither hated each other. If you read this book you’ll see this and if you read what people who worked on Star Trek said. They say that what is here is as close to the truth as we can get.

If you want to know how Spock came to be and how he led to Data later you need to read this book. The biggest thing I got from this book was what I’ve read in many books: decided what you want! Once you know what you want you need to keep working on it even when you think it’s complete. For me this book tells me that synchronicity is greatest force in your life if you're open to it. By following synchronicity will keep you open to many idea’s and will help lead you forward.

"Live long and prosper, Mr. Nimoy!"

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Leonard Nimoy's narration of his story. His tone is conversational and open, very easy on the ears and always well done. Mr. Nimoy's narration did not come across as a "read" so much as a frank discussion of his life, sharing mainly on the professional level and keeping personal issues to a minimum. That was fine with me. I don't feel the need to know the details of the personal business of celebrities. I appreciated Mr. Nimoy's chronological approach to the Star Trek decades-long saga, which helped me place the details in their proper context. It's hard to believe the Star Trek franchise is only one year away from celebrating its 50th anniversary! Mr. Nimoy was one of the original cast and he continues to participate even now, via cameo roles in the current incarnation of Star Trek movies. Mr. Nimoy also has a long, distinguished career as an actor/director/producer in multiple media, not just Stark Trek episodes and movies. In particular, I respected Mr. Nimoy's gentlemanly approach to any conflicts that arose among fellow actors, directors and studio heads over the course of his career. This is an entertaining and engaging audio book, I suspect better than the printed version thanks to Mr. Nimoy's narration. I highly recommend this listening experience to everyone who likes Star Trek, especially those who, like me, have been fans from the beginning.

"Enjoyed all the inside information on Star Trek."
If you could sum up I Am Spock in three words, what would they be?

    Fans will enjoy!

What did you like best about this story?

The behind the scenes stories of how certain events came to be, such as the Vulcan Nerve Pinch and how the actors were forced into making some of the worst scenes or movies such as STTMP.

Which character – as performed by Leonard Nimoy – was your favorite?

    Spock of course.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, but I learned stuff that I never knew I wanted to know.

    Any additional comments?

Definitely reccomend to every Star Trek fan! I only hope there is a follow up since the story cuts off about ten years ago.
