Publisher's summary

This is the personal side of battle, where emotion, courage, and strength are stretched to the limits.

In one of the most compelling combat narratives ever written, Staff Sergeant David Bellavia, an Army infantry platoon leader in Iraq, gives a teeth-rattling, first-hand account of 11 straight days of heavy house-to-house fighting during the climactic second battle of Fallujah. His actions in the firefight, which included killing five insurgents in hand-to-hand combat, earned Bellavia the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and New York State's highest military honor, the Conspicuous Service Cross. He has been nominated for the Medal of Honor and for the Army's second-highest combat medal, the Distinguished Service Cross.

an incredibly vivid memoir

this is an incredibly Vivid Memoir of a medal of honor recipients time in Iraq and his dealing with the effects afterwards. this gritty portrayal of combat and the life of an infantryman on the front lines of Modern War does not glamorize the experience at all. It gives a very real account of the sacrifice made by the men and women who serve on the front lines.

relatable and detailed story

I love this book so much. I was in Iraq from 2005-2006 and again from 2008-2009 so I was able to relate to many of the missions, stories, and backgrounds he spoke about in this book. a must-read for anyone in a leadership position.

My first war memoir…

Was thrilling, insightful, powerful, sorrowful and most of all important. Important for all of us to understand just what it is that our modern day warriors go through and just why they go through it.

Shout out Sgt. Bellevia and all the men of his platoon..
