Publisher's summary

Tom Hanks wrote the introduction to this rousing story of two inseparable friends and soldiers portrayed in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

William "Wild Bill" Guarnere and Edward "Babe" Heffron were among the first paratroopers of the U.S. Army - members of an elite unit of the 101st Airborne Division called Easy Company. Arguably the bravest, most efficient, physically fit, and tight-knit group of soldiers the Army has ever produced, the unit was called upon for every high-risk operation of the war, including D-Day, Operation Market Garden in Holland, the Battle of the Bulge, and the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden.

Both fought side-by-side until Guarnere lost his leg in the Battle of the Bulge and was sent home. Heffron went on to liberate concentration camps and rake Hitler's Eagle's Nest hideout. United by their experience, the two reconnected at the war's end and have been the best of friends ever since. Their story is a tribute to the lasting bond forged between comrades in arms - and to all those who fought for freedom.

Unequivocal authenticy

The narrator conveyed not only the confidence of paratroopers from South Philadelphia... but also the emotion that Wild Bill and Babe felt in recounting their experiences. A must read/listen for any fan of history, but especially for those interested in learning more of the men from Easy Company of the 101st.

Beautiful Story of a Bond of Brothers

I love the entire story. It was sad at some point, but overall a delightful story and easy read. I am amazed by the outstanding bravery of the young men who went to fight a war to protect their country in WWII.

Thank you Bill and Babe and everyone who has served.

These bigger than life personalities tell their life stories in intertwined with tears, laughs and personality. We hear stories not mentioned in Band of Brothers and we get more insight into their brothers in arms.

I thank you for serving this fine nation. May the beer keep flowing in heaven with your Band of Brothers.

One of the best WW II books I have come across.

This book will open your eyes to the reality of the horror of war and the apparently limitless courage and strength of the human spirit.. It's an extraordinarily compelling story about two of the many heroic young men who fought in the 101st Airborne Division in some of the most crucial battles on the Western Front during World War II. Very few of the many books I have read on this topic have moved me as this one did. (Two others that come to mind are Eugene Sledge's WITH THE OLD BREED AT PELELIU AND OKINAWA and William Manchester's GOODBYE, DARKNESS.) The narrator does an absolutely masterful job. He makes you feel that Guarnere and Heffron are actually doing the narration. Another title for the book could have been "INDOMITABLE."

Get an earful from Babe & Bill from their pub

Being a fan of the Band of Brothers book, the HBO show, this book came through as an obvious choice for a good listen, little did I know that I would get to listen to BABE and BILL as if we were at a bar with friends and got to hang out with them as they recounted stories.

The book ended just now, and I feel like it is 3 AM, and we all have to find a ride back home. The performance is just that good - The stories were that good - Bill and Babe will make you smile, tear up, laugh out loud, and reflect on life itself. I will definitely listen to their stories again, and so will you.

If you are a Band of Brothers fan, this is a must!

If you are a Band of Brothers fan or even a World War II history buff, this is a must listen. Having read about Babe and "Wild Bill," I found this book; and it does not disappoint. It may be narrated by Dick Hill, but it is as if both Babe and Wild Bill were narrating the story. It's an honest, funny, and even heartbreaking story of members of "The Greatest Generation." It tells the story of men who grew up serving their country and watching their friends die. It is the story of two men who don't want to be considered heroes but, in reality, are true heroes.
