Publisher's Summary

In this first-person account of becoming the FBI's top serial-killer hunter and a member of a religious order in an attempt to discern the true nature of good and evil, Roger L. Depue searches for an understanding of how evil develops. Between Good and Evil is Depue's look back at a life spent apprehending criminals, especially serial killers, first as a small-town police chief, then an FBI-SWAT team member, Behavioral Sciences Unit chief, and a developer of revolutionary law enforcement programs.

The book also examines Depue's experience studying with the Brothers of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles in an attempt to discover why a good person like his wife, whom he had lost to cancer, is allowed to die while monstrous criminals get to live. Following his time in the clergy, Depue returned to law-enforcement and today heads one of the world's most elite forensics think tanks, "The Academy".

This book is alright, but in my humble opinion too much personal info of the author.

    Any additional comments?

Roger Depue was an admirable example of a law enforcement professional. Interesting accounts of his work in some of the most notorious crimes in the nation. Some images will be hard to forget and you'll wish you never saw/heard them.

    "More than I expected!"
What did you love best about Between Good and Evil?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it was so much more than I expected! What I expected was a book about criminal profiling and real-life examples of how these detectives go about creating psychological profiles of brutal killers and solve crimes. This book has all of that and so much more. This book is also a touching autobiography of Dr. Depue, who in many ways was a pioneer in his profession. Dr. Depue shares his childhood experiences, his relationship with his father, and all of the elements of his life that he believes shaped his mission to stamp out evil where it hides. I was touched by his trials, his honesty about his own mistakes, and his deep love for his wife that sustained him as he saw first hand (on a daily basis) the unfathomable evil that humans are capable of. Dr. Depue also shares his personal and spiritual struggles to reconcile living in a world where such evil exists. I came away with a deep respect for the men and women who put themselves in harms way and sacrifice so much (even their own sanity at times) to stop real-life monsters from preying on you and me. God bless them all!

    "solid nonfiction read"

you can easily see this guy's influence on so many crime dramas we see today on tv (criminal minds, basically any show with criminal profiling). when I read reviews, some reviewers felt Depeu was full of himself. I didn't get that impression but this guy can be full of himself, a true pioneer in criminal investigations & psychological profiling.

    "Deceitful Title"

I bought this book expecting to hear all about the "Most Violent Predators" Agent Depue has met, but the first 4 hours is about his childhood and the last 2 are about Jesus.... Interesting, but the title does not match the content.

"Great choice, well written, well read"

Roger Depue has led an interesting life, and at it's heart, Between Good and Evil is an autobiography depicting how he made his way from an ordinary upbringing to the head of the FBI's behavioral sciences unit . . . and beyond.

It's peppered with case studies of depraved criminals. These studies are graphic without being pornographic. The victims are treated with respect, and the treatments are detailed, without being overwhelming. Some are disturbing, as they should be, but somehow the story allows the reader to leave without being emotionally drained . . .The subject matter is handled well.

In full disclosure, this was my first "profiling" book. Looking for others now.

    "Between Good and Evil"

The book is mesmerizing, frightening, true, insightful and may tell more about our innerselves than we want to know.

If there ever was an audio perfectly read, this one is it.

As for the guy who panned the book, I'm glad I'm not him, and I'll bet he didn't grow up anywhere near Biloxi MS.

    "the real deal"

this is a moving, biographically-based journey into the modern study and investigation of violent crime, but more, it is also a psychological and philosphical journey, of an observant, articulate - and deeply spiritual - man, who also happens to be a founding father of FBI behavior profiling. his approach and conclusions reagarding violent offenders are frank, hard-earned, long pondered and not to be ignored. much more than i had bargained for, this is one of my favorite audio books ever.

    "self absorbed 101"

Amazing, according to himself he was the toughest guy on the block, the smartest man in the universe, and an example for us all in the area of morality. He's a genius just ask him. This nothing but an exaggerated tooting of ones own horn. This guy should never be allowed to write about himself ever again. This title is also very uninformative, a bragging pack of stretched and self filtered recollections. Don't waste your time.
