Publisher's summary

In this first-person account of becoming the FBI's top serial-killer hunter and a member of a religious order in an attempt to discern the true nature of good and evil, Roger L. Depue searches for an understanding of how evil develops. Between Good and Evil is Depue's look back at a life spent apprehending criminals, especially serial killers, first as a small-town police chief, then an FBI-SWAT team member, Behavioral Sciences Unit chief, and a developer of revolutionary law enforcement programs.

The book also examines Depue's experience studying with the Brothers of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles in an attempt to discover why a good person like his wife, whom he had lost to cancer, is allowed to die while monstrous criminals get to live. Following his time in the clergy, Depue returned to law-enforcement and today heads one of the world's most elite forensics think tanks, "The Academy".

Depue is so interestingly human.

Would you consider the audio edition of Between Good and Evil to be better than the print version?

Did not read the print version.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the famous cases and the humanity of Depue during his personal journey.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Depue sent a new BSU agent to meet with Ted Bundy after all his other agents were denied. The new agent got through and created a realtionship with Bundy to get so much information, which helped the BSU.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. There are some moments you need a break. You are told about horrible cases with horrible events.

Any additional comments?

It was well read and an interesting story.

distractingly self-aggrandizing

There was a good story there but this guy spends way too much time proclaiming his own greatness!

An eye opening book

I started listening to this book wanting to know more about how criminals are caught, how profiles are identified and how they resolved various cases. I wanted to know the history of profiling in US... I think that I got all my objectives except the cases and how they identify the murderers- but some cases we never find the criminal- exactly like in life. And this frustrates us (the listener) and that frustrates the author, and then you feel for the author. He describes scenes that will make you feel like screaming your lungs out that such an evil is even aloud to exist, and you get closer to the author even more... And then the author goes through one of the life crises and you want to know how everything will end up... I disagree with the previous reviewer that the author is trying to impose his religion on others- he found peace through religion, self restrospection and meditation.
The book is not for faint of heart as some of the scenes (that are real) are really more then Hollywood is putting out there...

No once was enough.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Rodger

Have you listened to any of Paul Michael’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I would. He was great

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Wouldn't

Fancinating and frightening at the same time

The author showed how they had to partially become like the murderers. They had to understand how and why they think the way they do. Highly Recommend

Interesting...

Its a very interesting book and it is graphic in description. If your not up for that kind of thing or have a weak stomach you may not like this. (At least there are no pictures!) I would recommend this to anyone interested in true crime, forensics, and the psychology of what makes a serial killer tick. I enjoyed it. (even if I did get squeamish one or two times.)

the real deal

this is a moving, biographically-based journey into the modern study and investigation of violent crime, but more, it is also a psychological and philosphical journey, of an observant, articulate - and deeply spiritual - man, who also happens to be a founding father of FBI behavior profiling. his approach and conclusions reagarding violent offenders are frank, hard-earned, long pondered and not to be ignored. much more than i had bargained for, this is one of my favorite audio books ever.

not for the faint of heart

Any additional comments?

Roger Depue was an admirable example of a law enforcement professional. Interesting accounts of his work in some of the most notorious crimes in the nation. Some images will be hard to forget and you'll wish you never saw/heard them.

What did you love best about Between Good and Evil?

Though fantasy monster hunter book have my enjoyment. Hearing about real people in the most couched and gentle reference was very disturbing. These folks that really hunt the monsters are something!
