Publisher's summary

He is the deadliest American sniper ever, called "the devil" by the enemies he hunted and "the legend" by his Navy SEAL brothers.

From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned legendary status among his fellow SEALs, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, whom he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions. Gripping and unforgettable, Kyle’s masterful account of his extraordinary battlefield experiences ranks as one of the great war memoirs of all time.

A native Texan who learned to shoot on childhood hunting trips with his father, Kyle was a champion saddle-bronc rider prior to joining the Navy. After 9/11, he was thrust onto the front lines of the War on Terror, and soon found his calling as a world-class sniper who performed best under fire. He recorded a personal-record 2,100-yard kill shot outside Baghdad; in Fallujah, Kyle braved heavy fire to rescue a group of Marines trapped on a street; in Ramadi, he stared down insurgents with his pistol in close combat. Kyle talks honestly about the pain of war - of twice being shot and experiencing the tragic deaths of two close friends.

American Sniper also honors Kyle's fellow warriors, who raised hell on and off the battlefield. And in moving first-person accounts throughout, Kyle's wife, Taya, speaks openly about the strains of war on their marriage and children, as well as on Chris.

Adrenaline-charged and deeply personal, American Sniper is a thrilling eyewitness account of war that only one man could tell.

American Hero

An inspiring story. There's a LOT of description about weapons and war in general that I personally had difficulty getting through just because I'm not "into" all that but he was truly an American hero.

One of my all time fovorites

Would you listen to American Sniper again? Why?

Yes. Being a Vietnam Vet I can identify with some parts.

What did you like best about this story?

Both sides of the husband and wife relationship were equally told in great detail.

Have you listened to any of John Pruden’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Once again the military/industrial complex sends young American males to die for WHAT. Please tell me what was gained from this war or any other since WWII.

Truly. a Great book about a Greater man!

I enjoyed the honesty and integrity he had and I agree if you are going to send a man over to defend our country and his life is on the line he should be able to decide if he needs to shoot moths ROE from someone sitting over here in his reconditioned house with several bodyguards protecting him. let them do there job if people could see the way they kill our civilian as in beheadings they don't just whack off their heads they take about 20 min.sawing there heads off to inflict maximum torture.

An eye into a soldiers life

What made the experience of listening to American Sniper the most enjoyable?

As a fan of military thrillers, I picked this book up to read into the life of an actual soldier. What I got was a well written account, a blend of the soldiers personal life and struggles, mixed with pure military bravado. I enjoyed the book. Didn't agree with all his views but it was a solid read. A great addition to my library.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Chris Kyle

Which character – as performed by John Pruden – was your favorite?

Chris Kyle

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When even though his daughter was sick, he chose to re-deploy back into the field.

Listen before you watch the movie if possible.

Knowing how the story tragically ended, it almost makes the book feel incomplete, but the way it was told was done very well. It isn't gorey, but it gives enough detail, especially during the battle situations, that you can get a feel for it.

Good but not great

I consider Chris Kyle a true American patriot and by no means have any intention of denigrating him or the sacrifice he has made for our country by writing this review. Of the non-fiction books describing the Seals and their efforts on our behalf, I found his book not to be written with the same depth as other books discussing similar subjects. In my humble opinion the book is a little too much rah rah, and somewhat short on substance. I enjoyed it but not to the extent I did the Warrier Elite by Captain Couch, Seal Team 6 or Lone Survivor.
