Publisher's summary

He is the deadliest American sniper ever, called "the devil" by the enemies he hunted and "the legend" by his Navy SEAL brothers.

From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned legendary status among his fellow SEALs, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, whom he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions. Gripping and unforgettable, Kyle’s masterful account of his extraordinary battlefield experiences ranks as one of the great war memoirs of all time.

A native Texan who learned to shoot on childhood hunting trips with his father, Kyle was a champion saddle-bronc rider prior to joining the Navy. After 9/11, he was thrust onto the front lines of the War on Terror, and soon found his calling as a world-class sniper who performed best under fire. He recorded a personal-record 2,100-yard kill shot outside Baghdad; in Fallujah, Kyle braved heavy fire to rescue a group of Marines trapped on a street; in Ramadi, he stared down insurgents with his pistol in close combat. Kyle talks honestly about the pain of war - of twice being shot and experiencing the tragic deaths of two close friends.

American Sniper also honors Kyle's fellow warriors, who raised hell on and off the battlefield. And in moving first-person accounts throughout, Kyle's wife, Taya, speaks openly about the strains of war on their marriage and children, as well as on Chris.

Adrenaline-charged and deeply personal, American Sniper is a thrilling eyewitness account of war that only one man could tell.

describes the Stan and Iraq, to a T, memories floo

describes the Stan and Iraq to a T, the missions, lots of memories flooded back to me listening to this book, looks like we were working in the same shitty cities doing the job we loved, bringing our brothers in arms home, and having the constant internal battle over the brotherhood and family back home, and getting out missing it.the rush the luls slow times and doing all sorts of crazy stuff to pass time. inbetween the fast pace of a hot and heavy gun fight, our plinking people off, being a guardian Angel for the other troops, they're never knew we were there, and or own guardian angels, our fallen brothers looking over us. and the change of you as a person, and the tempo change over the yrs of the war in the stans and Iraq. great book may have to listen a few more times to it and relive forgotten details of another life, when we were young and dumb and thought we were invisible. and for all of our fallen brothers in arms we will always keep you in or hearts, lest we forget.

sounds cliche but a true patriot

with all the hype surrounding the movie and the murder trial of Chris Kyle's killer I wanted to read the book. Chris is completely honest with how he felt during writing this book. he's also got a wicked sense of humor. I particularly like Tea's perspective interjected throughout about their relationship. I docked the reader a star because he tries on a Texas accent for Chris' parts and it really isn't that good. he did inject some emotion in the reading during relevant parts, so I'll give him an A for effort.

Great story of patriotism!

American Sniper is an excellent story of patriotism and courage. The courage it takes to serve and the courage it takes to tell the world about the trials of adjusting to home. God bless Chris Kyle.

Must read

Every American should read this book. If you haven't been in war you will never fully understand it. But this book gives a down to earth explanation of it and why they fought. Much respect for the troops that did what they were ordered to do. Feel free to hate I disagree with the policy behind the war, but honor those who fought it.

Worthwhile

A deeply personal and moving memoir that does not get too political. The retelling of his life and a good part of it involves the details of his training or choice of weapon.

An Intriguing Book

I found myself both impressed and concerned regarding the character of Chris Kyle. I believe you will too. An inside look behind the lines, so to speak. A good listen.

Phony Accent

Hated listening to the Narrator's Phony ON & OFF attempt at a Southern Accent. Love the book and story of the selfless struggle between the sense of duty and family.
