Publisher's summary

In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning. This is not merely a travel guide; it is a beautifully written and highly personal view into one man’s journey and the insights gained by abandoning what is comfortable and routine.

Critic reviews

"David Miller’s AWOL makes you feel the pain and joy of an Appalachian Trail thru-hike.... In vivid colors, David paints a picture of his memorable journey." (Larry Luxenberg Director of the Appalachian Trail Museum)

Find Me in the Woods

This book inspired me. David Miller's narration of his through hike on the Appalachian Trail is so filled with detail that I was astonished that he was able to get any actual hiking done.

I can't wait for my turn on the AT.

I'm Sure a Few AT Hikes Started with this Book!

Definitely a must-read for anyone with a passing interest in hiking the AT. It's extremely well-written - humorous, yet at the same time informative. I've hiked parts of the trail and found the descriptions spot-on.

Hike the Appalachian Trail Without Leaving Home

This book helps put life in perspective. My minor aches and pains are nothing compared to the agony David Miller suffered on the trail as a result of foot infections, a sprained ankle, and other complications, some of which nearly caused him to abandon his hike altogether. When I work out, I tell myself I’m only exercising for an hour at the most, not walking for ten hours a day through rough terrain. On frigid winter nights when I burrow under my blankets in bed, I’m thankful not to be soaking wet, trying to get dry in an equally wet sleeping bag.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail is quite a challenge. If you’re up to it, great. If not, I highly recommend this book. You’ll successfully hike this trail from the comfort of your own easy chair.

For the Aspiring Hiker

I’m not sure if this book would capture the attention of an average joe looking for another read, but as someone who enjoys hiking and wanted to know what through hiking is like I thought the book was very helpful. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to know more.

Vicarious hiker

Loved this relaxed, cogent, and well-written book. Enjoyed the well-matched performance of the reader. The closest I will get to this experience will be day-hiking out to and back from Springer Mountain so I thoroughly and vicariously enjoyed this narrative.

Eye-opener

I was intrigued by the title of this book, and then once I got into it, the intrigue continued. I appreciate that this was David Miller's account of his own personal thru-hiking experience - the good, the bad, and all, rather than a "how-to" book. The lessons and personal accounts have opened my eyes to better recognize and understand the needs of thru-hikers, to appreciate those who maintain the trails, and the hospitality of those who welcome hikers. This book provides a way to experience hiking the AT without the pain, while also inspiring the same, or at least some day hikes along the way. The comraderie and friendships made along the way are inspiring as well.
Christopher Lane's reading felt like we were hearing from the author himself. Well done.
